A 28 year old California woman died of "water intoxication" after a radio station contest to see who could drink the most amount of water without going to the bathroom. The winner received a Wii system. The woman entered the contest to win the Wii for her kids.

While no one may to be to blame, I wonder if the radio station made known to the contestants the dangers of over consuming water? I saw the news story on tv this morning and the people they polled did not know you could die from drinking too much water. They also interviewed a doctor who said that your organs swell due to the water, and in the case of your brain, it can only swell so much because of your skull. I'll bet this will change the way radio stations conduct contests in the future. Too bad someone had to pay the price for that to happen though.

Similar events have taken place at clubs where kids on E have drank to much water and basically have drown them selfs.

That's horrible...I never knew you could actually die from that. I figured you could get sick or something...

I believe from the news story I saw she came in second place. They had a clip where the winner, upon hearing of the woman's death expressed shock. She didn't realize you could die from overconsumption of water and told her husband that "the runner-up" died and that he said it could've been her. The winner also complained of being ill after the contest. I guess she got lucky.

Close, people drink so much water that they cause brain swelling. the brain swells and there's pressure against the skull, and they die.

A radio station here held a contest in Birmingham where the contestants had to sit on blocks of dry ice, whoever could sit on it the longest won. i don't remember what the prize was. all (5, i think) of the contestants went to hospital for cold burns.

i don't know about the brain swelling, but you can also die of hyponatremia. it's not uncommon for marathon runners to have this happen to them when they overhydrate before a race. what happens is you drink so much water that you wash out your electrolytes and you essentially dehydrate yourself with water. this is why sports drinks (well, good sports drinks, not gatorade and such) are better to drink because they can prevent this and they also help prevent muscle cramps due to dehydration.

Wasn't the whole water intoxication thing all over the news a few years back from frats forcing their pledges to drink water until they got sick?

I don't know if it was a nation-wide thing, but I know it was a HUGE ordeal around Pittsburgh, PA.
