98 taurus cd/radio

I have a 1998 taurus that has the face plate for a cd player. It only has the am/fm cassette functions. No slot for the cd- Is there a way to put in a radio with cd without using a changer in the trunk?
Thanks for the help

Re: 98 taurus cd/radio

So are you asking about installing an aftermarket single disc deck, or a factory single disc deck?

Does your car has the Electronic Automatic Temperature Controls (EATC) or the manual 3-dial Heat-Ventilation-A/C (HVAC) controls?

I'll have to check the wiring diagrams for the 1998 Taurus to see if all grades of audio systems used a Rear Control Unit (RCU) or if some of the lower grade systems bypassed it. If they all used the RCU and you can find a factory single disc head unit, you can probably unplug yours and install the single disc unit.

Try http://www.crutchfield.com select car audio and input the specifics for your car. Many of the items they sell can be purchased from local retailers if you want to check them out prior to purchasing.

Re: 98 taurus cd/radio

I'm also trying to remove the radio on a 99. It's the big circlular one with the climate controls included on the unit. It doesn't look like it's compatible with an aftermarket radio. Anyway does the panel that surrounds the radio just pull off or is there a trick to it. It's my first Ford and I'm more of a GM guy.
Thanks

Re: 98 taurus cd/radio

You need to pull the entire radio head unit and HVAC control assembly, called the Integrated Control Panel (ICP). There are special tools for this removal which can be easily acquired from most car audio sections in automotive parts stores, automotive electronics stores, or the automotive electronics sections of major department stores.

If you have the electronic automatic temperature controls (EATC) you cannot get an aftermarket plate to install an aftermarket single DIN deck. If you have the manual controls, replacement plates are available for single-DIN aftermarket replacements.

There is also a Rear Control Unit (RCU) which houses the amplifier, power antenna control (if applicable) and other functions. You will need to bypass that or get the adapter for it if you go aftermarket.
