Slave cylinder removal 1985 2.3 5speed

I have a 1985 ranger, 2.3, 5 speed; the clutch is burned up - i'm in the process of pulling the transmission. Have all the bell housing bolts off; speedometer cable off; drive shaft off; cross member off; started off; the only thing that remains on the transmission is the hydraulic line to the clutch. I cannot readily see how that is to be removed. It is high on the driver side do the transmission. What happens if I unbolt the master cylinder from the firewall and drop the transmission and simply pull out the whole hydraulic line with the transmission. Of course, what i'd really like to do is unhook the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder on the transmission - if someone could tell me how to do this. Thanks muchly.

don't unbolt the master, you will end up cracking the plastic tubing and its very expensive. there is a speical tool to get the line out. i got mine from a matco dealer for 5 bucks.

Re: Slave cylinder removal 1985 2.3 5speed

There's no use dropping the master cylinder. Just unbolt the slave cylinder from the hog's head. That's what I did when I was pulling my transmission for my '89 Ranger. And I also have an '83 Ranger that I had to replace the slave cylinder. Just align the actuating piston properly and it should be fine. If you absolutely need to remove the hydraulic line, there may or may not be a retaining screw or nut. If there is, loosen it, and then pop it off. It's a bitch, but you just have to work it off. I think it's just made so that it can be fitted onto the slave cylinder and that's how it stays on there. Remember to bleed your clutch system when you reinstall everything.

Edit: That hydraulic line should go to a projection off of the left side of the transmission. That's the slave cylinder. It's held in my two bolts. If you remove it, you may need to get a positioning band, it's just a piece of plastic that clips to either side of the slave cylinder and hold the actuating piston down for alignment. I replaced the clutch on my '83 and then the slave cylinder burst while I was driving and my clutch pressure went out. Unless your transmission is set up differently, that should be all there is to it.
