New old Car - oil change
Hi, I just purchase a 1988 325is. I want change the oil, but I don't know if I can change it with synthetic oil. Everything I read has stated that one should use synthetic oil in the BMW. Now the car has a BMW filter on it, but I don't know what type of oil. Can use synthetic oil on a car that has 99,273 miles on it?

Oil change
Hi there,
I have an even older BMW than you, and I have had succes in changing the oil with synthetic oil 5/40 from AGIP. ( The brand is that important, I have heard that MObile Oil is kinda hot in USA) Some of my friends told me that I should use a higher grade of oil, but as I can get the AGIP 5/40 to a fraction of the price, did I use this. It didnt case any problem, and the engine is running smooth. However, as its an old car/engine do I change the oil more often, 10,000 KM/around 6,000 M. Just remeber to change the filter as well. - I use the BMW stock filter, but is wondering if I should try K&N instead. |

You can safely use synthetic oils in a high mileage vehicle. The recommended method is to flush the engine first. One thing you may notice is a slight use of oil to begin with, in many cases this tappers off after time. All I can say is try it. As to your question on the makeup of synthetic compared to conventinal oil I read a brochure on synthetic-lubricants.com about synthetic oil here is the link hope this helps>>>http://www.synthetic-lubricants.com...%20Brochure.pdf
