1994 JGC lower Idler pulley removal

I have a 1994 JGC with the 4.0 engine. The lower idler pulley by the alt came apart and needs replacing. The problem that I am facing is removing it. When I turn the 15mm bolt clockwise that runs in the center of the pulley. nothing happens. Could there be something else holding it on?. Need Help.

Not to be insulting but clockwise is tightening.

When you say "Nothing is happening" is it just turning, or not moving at all? If it's turning then there's probably a nut on the backside that you'll have to hold.

I should have said the bolt will not loosen when I turn it counter clockwise. I will check to see if there is a nut holding it from the back. I almost have to remove the alternator in order to get at it.

thanks for your response.

Question Re: 1994 JGC lower Idler pulley removal

I am having the same exact problem, do you remember how you got yours off? All my bearings came out and when I turn in any direction it just turns and turns. I think something needs to be held from moving when you turn the bolt.

Try using one of those belt type tightening wrenches, Wally's got them as most big store retailers...

Make sure it's not a reverse (counterclockwise) bolt/thread.

Re: 1994 JGC lower Idler pulley removal

Hi there;
I'm new, I have a problem with my 1994 jeep grand cherokee and I do not know how to post my problem. Please help me to do so.
The promlem is that my cherokee start, go on just for 5 or 10 second and go of. The fuel pressure is about 35-40 but I took of the fuel pump and outside the pump pressure is 65 to 78. What can I do to start and run it good?

Got to the top of this page and click on GRAND CHEROKEE/GRAND CHEROKEE SRT8 and that will take you back to the main page for grand cherokee. then click on the NEW THREAD button at the tops of the list of threads. There you an start a new thread for your problem.

This is how I did it on my 1996 with a 5.2 engine. Yours could be different.

1. Remove the belt by turning the tensioner clockwise with a 15mm ratchet.
2. Remove the battery hold down and battery
3. Remove alternator wiring and AC sensor wire
4. Remove dipstick hold down bolt (to get to middle 14mm nut)
5. Remove 12mm nuts (2 - top and bottom) and ground wires
6. Remove tensioner mounting bracket (3 - 14mm nuts)
6. Remove coil wires
7. Remove coil / coil mounting bracket and tensioner / tensioner mounting bracket
8. Installation is reversal of this procedure.

Re: 1994 JGC lower Idler pulley removal

So, I am running into this bolt issue myself. I keep turning and nothing is happening. Is there anything else anyone can tell me that resolved this for them?
