Transfer case won't go into 4 wheel low

95 Cherokee 4.0...... works fine in 2 wheel and 4 wheel high. When I try to put the transfer case in 4lo it dosen't engage. Seems like the transfer case is still in neutral. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Re: Transfer case won't go into 4 wheel low

Is it command-trac (part time)?

Is the lever in 4wd LO or does it not go in? You should be stopped to go from N to 4wd LO and pull real hard.
The transmission should be in N also.

Re: Transfer case won't go into 4 wheel low

Just to expand on what Aloha said,
If your Jeep doesnt see 4WD Lo very often, it may be difficult to get it in. It helps if you are not completely stopped, like rolling ever so slightly, while you move the lever into lo. The transmission still needs to be in N though.

Re: Transfer case won't go into 4 wheel low

I also have a '95 Cherokee Sport with 231J transfer case. It also gives me a little trouble getting it into 4 wheel low. Trans in neutral and a firm jerk usually does it.Some times a little movement is needed. I try to shift the transfer case in and out of its gears at least once every couple of months. Just to keep it limbered up in case I need it.
