Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

I found a few of these kits at a department store for very cheap prices. Fw19 is probably one of the best from Revell in areas of size and accuracy. Fitments are still not as good though.

The Villeneuve edition instruction booklet

Big gap in the air intake, and the intake hole would have to be drilled

Drilled the correct fuel hole, filled the other for the French GP. (Villeneuve Ed. box mislead warning: picture is probably during qualifying)

BTW, Revell plastic is very soft, careful with stronger putties. They'll melt and soften the plastic, so as long as you don't touch it and let it cool, it is not a big problem. Same with glue, not too much, but soft plastic gives you a strong solid bond.

Sanded

All primed, will probably do more filling, and prime again

Cool. I'll be watching your progress. I have this one to do. Very nice decal sheet comes with it also.

Mike.

Re: Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

Any more progress on this one?

How do you plan to install the front suspension and the drivers seat? I have this kit also and it doesn't look like the seat can be installed when the body shell is glued together? I was planning on doing exactly what you're doing....

There is still progress, I haven't done much for a few months due to school. I've done basic painting on the body just recently. Should be done I hope in a week, two or so. Front suspension I cut them, as for the seat, I'll show you a trick!!

Thanks for reminding me, I forgot to post some additional progress from few months ago.
Here they are

I noticed after the Canadian GP in ref pics, the car has updated aero work, the rear curve flap. Ref: GurneyFlap

So I am doing the same thing to the kit.

The car is also missing this rear suspension support arm.

Rear section done! Calipers changed from the rear mounted to front mounted and rear upright triangle shape made to hold the rear support arms.

Headers painted and washed (not that realistic, but will be hidden anyways.)

wheel nuts painted

Tires are great, so are the wheels and decals. The decals are a pain to get on though, you need a steady hand and a lot of patience. Tire decals were not bad.

I believe both Bridgestone and Goodyear have this, but instructions from both Revell and Tamiya tend to make this mistake. The Words on the tires should be located directly opposite on each sides, and with the opposite names as well. I spent a long time on ref pics to reassure.

Another inaccuracy, 3 piece element wing, should be 2 (since I am sticking to French GP) Edit: Turns out the reference material was wrong, after looking at actual race photos, it was 3 elements. Don't always trust those stupid shell display cars, they tend to carry lots of inaccuracies.

Chassis and plank painted.

Re: Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

How is the progress coming along?

Are you planning on cutting that rear "bulk head" out and sliding the seat in that way?

What color blue are you going to use?

That wooden piece on the bottom looks good. Too skiny though. Sand it a bit.

Re: Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

Here is a recent update... with bad news

My paint mix with acrylic was not that great, it ended up getting weak, I should've mixed more future and isos alcohol with it. I think Tamiya acrylics and Gunze have that really strong agent solvent which makes the paint strong, I mean that clear part you see before you mix the paint together. I don't buy Tamiya paints as it's too expensive in North America (Canada), cost like 1 dollar cdn in Asia for a bottle...but I get more skills and experience working with more difficult acrylics.
The primer was a bit too smooth, so no bite for the paint to settle on.

Here is the paint coming off with tape, I found out when masking out for the white portion for the car...

Here is your answer jmwallac,
You are correct, I did cut out the rear bulkhead, sorry for the long wait... The paint used should be ultramarine blue, but I mixed some phthalo blue mixed with light blue, it looks quite close to the original plastic colour for reference.

Paint all stripped, primed again, this time with a better primer, a rougher general purpose I use and no problems ever, I'll need to sand though, but still better than Krylon...

Re: Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

That sucks about the paint peeling. What are you masking white? Don't the decals cover the white areas? Are your decals brittle? My rim decals cracked into about 8 pieces each rim. I'll have to touch up with some yellow paint.

Where did you get the ultramarine blue? I've read Tamiya X-3 is a close match, but X-4 is the royal blue which appears closer to the plastic color the model is dyed.

Good call on the bulk head. That should get rid of some ugly seams! I think I'm going to glue in the suspension pieces, and mask them off when they are to be painted. Either that or just wrap them in CF decals.

Re: Williams FW-19 Villeneuve 1/24 Revell

Finally an update. I probably have the worst time management among the modelers here. , well and many things in general in terms of time.
I guess I got a bit lazy and felt no motivation, but I've decided to take it slowly, and it's almost done.

All painted, I really like the paint I mixed this time, colour was pure and deep, sticked well too.

The white portion.

All the body decals done, the stripes were a pain. Good thing I held my patience, the stripes can be so annoying there's no doubt some people would prefer to throw the whole car into a burner or something. I found a good method is to use clear and hair dryer and slowly mold it into shape, it's safer than those softening solution since theres no risk in melting the whole thing.

Body will now get a clear and polish!

Now I need to finish the seat, attach the wheels, suspensions, wings, cameras and final adjustments, then it'll be all done.

Jimwallac: The paint I just mixed a combination of dark blue to light to this navy blue, and surprisingly, the combination gave a colour close enough to the plastic and the dark blue of the box, which I believe is quite close to the actual thing. I think which ever colour that is close to the plastic should do. The decals are brittle in some ways, if too much force applied, then they will break off easily, my wheel decal also needed touch up!
