daytime running lights/automatic headlights

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am 2.4l 4 cylinder...today when i went to leave my service vehicle soon light came on. Later I noticed my DRL's flickered when the car was started and then the svs light would come on. My husband took out the relay and put it back in and the daytime lights stay on without the car even being on. We changed the relay and the same thing. The automatic headlights won't work either...it works manually but the passenger side headlight is the only one that works....might be a bulb not sure. Does anyone have any idea as to what to do or look at?

If one of the highbeams are out the SVS light will light up.
The DRLs dont light up till the car is put into gear usually.

But I think your DRL relay may be bad, or the connections are dirty.
Also the Automatic light control relays it uses 2,
in the fuse box under the hood.

Check the fuses under the hood for the right and left heaadlamps .

The daytime running lights would flicker when put in gear and then go out and that is when the svs light would come on. So we pulled the relay and put it back in and the drl's were on without the car even being on or the key even in the ignition. We went and bought a new relay and put in and the same thing...drl were staying on. So as of right now we have the relay pulled. Also the automatic headlights....the sensor is working b/c the dash is lighting up....but the headlights are just not coming on.

Like I said above check all the fuses and relays that would be for the headlights(or the auto control relays).

When you pull the DRL relay the lights wont come on during the daytime because the cicuit is broken when the relay is not pluged in.

Thier is also a ground wire for the headlights inside the front fenders. These can get corroded and rusty and loose connections, which might allow the headlight to light up with out the key inserted.

If this all fails, get the car scanned with an OBD II scanner and see what codes come up.

if you pull the drl relay, will the headlights still work when turned on manually?

They should because the DRL only controls the DRLs.
The lights at night are controled by the ALC relay and sensor.

I've killed the DRLs in both mine.
If its bad weather and I need them on in the day I do,
if I dont need them then why have them on.

I have been wanting mine off for a long time. I want to control them myself. I use Silverstars and I dont want them on all the time if not needed. I was afraid to pull the relay in the engine compartment. I have tried to pull it out but it looks like there must be a special tool to do so. I have a 2000 SE.

Hey Tony, I wouldnt bother pulling the relay.
As this will illuminate your SVS light

Here is the DRL disable for the 99-00' GA's.

It does take some getting used to when you first disable them.
At night, you get used to everything jusut coming on,
and its so dark afterwards, I love it !

I got rid of my drl's, and also the acl sensor for the same reason.... I installed SilverStars and I didn't want them illuminated during the daytime; they're too expensive to be run at half-brightness all day. So I got rid of the drl's, but I went a step further and installed a slide switch which is tucked away inside my glovebox. Now if I want the drl's on, I simply flip the switch. In heavy rain or even fog, I'll sometimes flip the switch and put them on. But my driving is very limited so I don't use the switch too often.

That damn alc sensor was buggin' me too so while I was working on the drl's under the dash, I got rid of that thing too. That sensor was buggy because it would turn on my headlights just from me driving into a dark, shady area....it would think darkness was coming, lol. I got sick of that and got rid of it. Now I finally have complete control of my lights and fogs.

I love those Silverstar bulbs; I also have 'em in my fogs too. Nice, very white light output.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a little bit of work. Maybe if I get the nerve I will try this in the spring.
