**Offical 1979 Corvette Thread** Project Auto --> Manual/Engine Redo MANY PIC Progres
Hello Everyone! This is my new project that I am starting. As you all know I have here a 1979 Corvette with an automatic transmission. I started by pulling the motor last weekend along with pulling the transmission. Here are some pictures showing little progress:
Here we have the 79' on the lift in the air  And a random shot of the underbody, not too shabby.  After a couple hours I got the motor out of the car along with throwing the transmission in the back of the shop with plans not to use it again...  Then while the motor is out of the car I am going to break it down to clean everything and paint it so it looks good. I have to research what color the block was origionally then go from there. I cleared off this bench on the other side of the garage to use while i take the motor apart. Pretty neat if I must say so myself.  So I started by taking the quadra jet out and I haven't decided wheather or not I am going to rebuild it, have someone rebuild it, or someone said a remanufactured one costs as much as having one rebuilt. Here is a picture of the Carb removed off the motor... I know its pretty bad.  After that I pulled the intake off and got a look inside and im excited because it looks pretty clean...  Then I got a look at the valve train... not bad.. all the rods move freely (Like you can move them with your fingers in a circle not up and down that would be bad)  Then I have a picture of one of the heads they both pretty much look the same.   Now with the heads off you can see down into the cylinders and they look pretty clean dont they??   Now what I plan to do with everything is clean it up really well. Then paint parts that are ment to have paint. Not going to mess with any motor work. Compression was good and everything looks to be in order. I mean the car drove fine and idled great so just a refresh here. Have to remember a college student rebuild here lol. The big thing with this project is that its going to be Changed/swapped from a automatic to a 4 speed manual. This is going to be a fun project to get into!  Any comments suggestions are welcome I will be updating with progress a little bit every now and then. Thanks!

looks like a good start why you bothering to change trannys to standard?

 Build on hold until I get a good paying job, either in school or once I get out. At that time a full tear down and complete rebuild should be in order. The Purple People Eater will ride again... January 2011 can't come soon enough.

I bought a gasket kit. i dont have much money after car payment and bills came in so im goin to use the same motor, swap transmissions, fix all wiring, put a little system in the back and call it my race car
 also with headers and side pipes

I was told by a friend to replace the carborator with a holly something or other you guys know anything about them?

Yeah, they're great carbureators and have a wide variety to choose from.

Found a holly 650 CFM dont knwo too much specs from Pepboys brand new they can order it for me. I only get it from there because i have dealer account and tax exempt so that new carb would be 250$ good deal?
I need help finding a bell housing for the 4 speed conversion i cant find one anywhere... and i am beginning to find out that parts for this damn car are rediculously expensive! oh well it will be worth it in the end oh baby i cant wait!

its going to be a stock wide ratio transmission im not sure of hte exact name but its a stock 4 speed thats ment to be in the car...

the corvette is now up for sale.... i am moving soon (DEC 28) and cant have it any longer... i am putting the transmission back in and shipping it...

Brian why would you want a second life-long project? You've already dedicate the rest of your current life to finishing the Talon.
