dashmat?

Ok...im painting my interior black. and i noticed that the top of the dash board is covered with a soft leathery material. I assume i can't just primer and paint over it. Anyone know how to get it off easily. Those of you who have painted their interior...what did you do?

if its the same as mine, just paint it. the only thing u cant do w/ it is sand it.

Hey I'm in the process of this too....heres my two cents on it, remove the dash piece, wash it very well with soap and water, dry it, (I paint in the basement where its warm) but you may have a shop or somewhere else where you paint during the winter, and for the love of god, buy a hairdryer, it saves drying time, and helps paint stick better, so now that the dash is laying there clean and dry, get it nice and warm with the hairdryer, and spray a LIGHT coat of primer on it, blow dry it dry, only takes 30 seconds for it to dry, and keep applying thin coats of primer until it is completely covered. After, blow dry it for a few extra minutes to ensure its dry and warm for the paint, now for the paint, make sure, you have VINYL&FABRIC paint, and start doing thin coats and blow drying them between coats, apply as many coats as you feel necassary, and then blow dry for 5- 10 minutes extra to make sure its dry and warm for the clear cloat. same deal with clearcoat, light coats, blow dry between and so on. After you are done, let the piece sit for an hour or so to cool down and form. then voila, should have a nice shiny dash, be careful puttin it back in, and watch out you dont bend it because everyone knows what happens if you bend something rubber that just got painted, it messes it up bigtime. Anyways thats the process I will be using soon when I do mine, let me know how it turns out for you, should work just fine!

yes, be VERY careful! when i was puttin my dash back in during the fall after i painted it, i ended up scratching it and now theres a deep scratch in my dash about 2 in long that i have to sand and fill when i redo my interior. *sigh*

...I thought you don't need primer when you use the duplicolor vinyl&fabric paint

I don't know from experience but i totally fucked my dash up because I sanded the vinyl oops lol and I asked why and someone said when you're using the vinyl and fabric paint you don't need to use primer, idk if it will mess it up or if it will make a difference at all

i dont think it matters. i used that stuff w/o primer and wut ive done so far turned out really good.

well mine is almost finished, i put 1 layer of primer, emptied 2 cans of vinyl and fabric paint onto the dashboard and now just emptying a can of clearcoat on it, ill let you know how it works out!

Yeah i didn't primer the top of the dash and it turned out well. And I used the Duplicolor fabric stuff

Thanks, I already have a few touch-ups to do on the arm-rest... and the shift nob and ebrake. how do you get that damn ebrake off?

lol. idk...im having problems getting my ebrake handle off too.

As stated, don't paint thigns you will have to repaint frequently, aka, arm rests, door handles, any of that
