I have the same issue with my 01 LS8 Sport. Mine only does it when going into Drive. Reverse seems to be pretty smooth. Hopefully someone can give us both a little insight.

Also, does anyone know what the buzzing sound is when in D5(drive)? It doesn't do it in D4, or in the DSS mode. You can usually only hear it with the window down, next to a building(read: drivethrough window).

Once the car is warmed up its fine, maybe its the cold weather then. I'm going to a trans shop just to be safe.

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

You may all have the same problem. Try changeing you'r transmission oil and filter. I'm going to do it today. You could just wait a day or two and I'll let you know if that's the problem.

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for this. The TSB is TSB 05-21-8.

DELAYED OR HARSH REVERSE ENGAGEMENTS -
5R555 TRANSMISSION - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO
09/23/2004 FORD:
2004-2005 Thunderbird, Explorer LINCOLN:
2004-2005 LS, Aviator MERCURY:
2004-2005 Mountaineer This article supersedes TSB 05-15-4 to correct the Service Procedure.

If your transmission is effected by this issue, it's too late for the additive that can be added to prevent the shift solenoids from sticking. In that case, they must be replaced and the additive added at that point.

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

I have the same transmission problem. How do I check the Tranny oil, I can not find a dip-stick. So if I drop the pan to change filter and oil, how do fill (or replace oil) the transmission? HELP!!!!

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

Welcome to the forum!

You're right, the LS does not have a dipstick. There is a fill/check plug on the transmission itself. There is a special adapter used to fill the transmission. I'm not sure how readily available the adapter is, or if there's an easy way to fabricate one. I do recall someone mentioning what they've used in one of the other threads. Use the "Search this forum" feature from the LS forum main page to search for the thread/post.

Good thing you asked about how to fill before you dropped the pan!

I'm a little late with my reply but here it goes...
Rod was right, In my case after troubleshooting, Changing the oil and filter and a few hours of reserch. I found the TSB. My problem is the sylinoids. I searched around and was able to get a transmission for cheaper than I would have paid for the shift sylinoids.(By the grace of God ) As usual I'm doing the work myself. I'll do it next weekend. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

If its sticking solenoids thats causing the problem I'd go with changing the fluid/filter and use some auto-rx before I go swapping transmissions or replacing solenoids.

Re: A Transmission Qustion?

Changing the fluid on the LS transmission is not as straight-forward as what most are familiar with. Since there is no dipstick, filling the transmission requires a special nozzle-like dealy bobber. The factory claims that once the solenoids start sticking, fluid additives won't reverse or help the issue and the only correction is to replace the solenoids.

Lictor, what is your question? It sounds like you replaced the solenoids and you tried to reset the transmission computer but maybe the code is still present, or is it still stuck in one gear? Have you had the transmission codes pulled to determine what the car thinks the problem is? If so, please post the specific code by number.

Well after a few months I have changed out the transmission and learned how to spell sileniod. To fill the transmission I used a grease gun. I removed the adapter for the end of the grease gun and replaced it with a hose that was large enough to pass the oil but smallenough to fit into the trans. fill point.
