Another Programming Question!!

Bought a 1999 Regal LS, didn't get any remotes with it. Bought one at the local dealer, found programming directions online. I can't get the car to go into the programming mode, I don't get the 3 beeps, etc, etc. Is there a way to troubleshoot the system without having to pay the ransom at the dealer to get this fixed?????

I have seen at least two different versions of the programming directions. How do I know which is the correct one for my car??????

Welcome to AF.

The one below works for a '99 Regal LS. I used it last month when the battery in our remote died. Follow each step exactly and may have to be repeated.

Here is the data off the remote which is the original:

GM: 10246215
Canada: 218 101 487
Model/FCC ID: AB00204T



1997 to 1999 Buick Regal

In the event that a transmitter is lost, program the old and the new transmitters into the memory of the remote control door lock receiver. Up to 4 transmitters may be programmed.


Important
Once entering this procedure, programming the first transmitter erases all previous transmitters. You must program all transmitters.
Program one vehicle at a time. One transmitter could be programmed into other vehicles that are also on program mode in close proximity.

1 Sit in the driver's seat.
2 Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.
3 Close all vehicle doors.
4 Press and hold unlock on the door lock switch.
5 While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, insert and remove the ignition key twice. Do not rotate the ignition lock cylinder.
6 Insert the ignition key a third time leaving the key in the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition must remain in the LOCK position for the rest of the procedure.
7 Release the door lock switch. You will hear three chimes. This chime feedback indicates that transmitter programming is active.
8 Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time on the keyless entry transmitter for 12 seconds. You will hear two chimes. This chime feedback indicates that the transmitter has been programmed successfully.
9 Repeat step 8 for the rest of the transmitters (for a total of 4 transmitters).
10 Exit this procedure by removing the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder.

How do I proceed when these steps fail to work???? Is there anything I can do to determine the reason I can't get the car into the programming mode???

Then it most likely means you have a bonifide problem with the remote keyless entry system which may explain why you received no remotes with it. These problems are hard to troubleshoot without proper documentation and diagnostics equipment to determine whether it is the RCDLR module, wiring, a serial data error, ignition switch key cylinder or possibly a body control module (BCM).

Here are the basics:

1) Check to make sure your model supports remote keyless entry. <--This is probably a moot question since all 1999 Regal LS and GS models came standard with RKE.

2) Make sure the GM part number of 10246215 matches on the remote.

3) Make sure remote has a lithium coin battery CR2032 installed and it is putting out at least 3.0 vdc confirmed with a digital multimeter. Make sure battery is installed properly for polarity.

4) Run the synchronization procedure before programming located in Chapter 2 of the owner's manual, Page 2-13. Sync is confirmed when you hear the door locks cycle or the horn beeps 3 times.

With Remote in hand stand close to vehicle. Press and hold lock and unlock buttons for at least 7 seconds. Door locks should cycle or horn beeps 3 times.

5) Check the electrical connectors for tightness on the body control module (BCM) and remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR). Check any and all relevant fuses feeding these components.

Can't get reprogramming to work. Where is the BCM and the RCDLR located???

A couple of the local stereo install places offer keyless systems. Has anyone out there had one of these installed instead of getting the OEM one fixed???? Problems?????:banghe ad:

The BCM is located under the driver's side of the dash by the emergency brake. It is a module and you will see the electrical conenctors on the bottom as you look up. You'll have to remove the kickpanel first.

The RCDLR is located under the dash to the area right of the steering column and it is mounted to the metal dash cross-frame. Smaller module.

The RCDLR module receives the signal from the remote and then passes the info via the serial data bus to the BCM module.

These problems can be fixed but in a DIY capacity but all you can do is replace the suspected parts without proper diagnostics but it will cost. If the BCM module is the problem it will need to be programmed/initialized by a GM dealer. Another option is to get the parts from a salvage yard off a similar year Regal LS. The BCM will then be plug and play. Good luck.

Would a bad component show bad on a scan, but not turn on the SES??? What kind of scanner would the dealer use???

Sorry about all these questions, I've never owned a vehicle that has had so many "boxes" in it. Sometimes I wish for the old setting the points and dwell days!!!

Body/chassis codes may not turn on the SES MIL light or SVS light. However, a scan may reveal DTCs that have been stored. The GM dealers use a GM Tech II scan tool and a diagnostics procedure. Most likely a loss of serial data communications since it sounds dead.
