networking...

i have a wireless b linksys router, a laptop with wireless g (built in, not linksys), a dektop with wireless g (linksys), and a desktop hooked right to the router, my desktop with the linksys card doesnt seem to be working, if i use the program with it, it might connect, but only runs 5.5mbps as to 11mbps when it worked right, if it does connect, i only get the network, no internet, and it rarely connects, ive tried the windows configuration, manually doing it in control pannel, any ideas? it stopped working after i reset the router, the rest were working, i have windows xp, ohh, the router may be out right now, but im checking that tomorow because it will be my first day from work this week

I've said it before - type in full sentences and I'll be happy to put the effort into understanding your problem, and helping you troubleshoot it.

Re: networking...

Ok, starting over. I have a desktop wih a wireless g nic. It was working up until a little while ago. I reinstalled windows, then the nic, it still doesnt work. It may sometimes connect to the network, but will not get internet. I have tried to manually configure it, use the linksys tool, and use the windows tool. I have been expierencing network problems with the 4 port wireless b router for quite some time. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: networking...

check in control panel add/remove programs for .NET framework and uninstall it if you can. Microsoft installed it on my XP laptop as an automatic update and it gave me all kinds of networking problems. If you can't remove it using control panel their web site has instructions on how to manually remove it.

Re: networking...

When you say you have network, but not internet - can you ping other computers on the network? Can you access file or print shares on other computers on your network?

Re: networking...

Before you try and ping the other computers on your network, either turn the Windows Firewall (or whatever firewall you're running) OFF or add an exception for ICMP traffic.

Windows Firewall > Advanced > ICMP > Settings > Allow incoming echo request

Also, on the machine with that is having problems, please run an ipconfig/all from a command prompt and copy/past the results here.

Re: networking...

Ok, when i saw it connects to the network without internet I mean that it connects to the router, sees the network, connects to the network, but has absalutly no internet, no IM or IE or firefox, nothin. The linksys utility shows a diagram kinda like this:
Card - Router - Internet
Between those, it will have a little pic showing conectivity or no conectivity, sometimes it says cannot associate with access point, sometimes it connects card and router, but no internet. But sometimes when it connects, runing wireless b at 11mbs, most of the time is runs at 5.5mbs. Always no internet. A few friends brought their computers at one point and they had the same problem, but it just stopped working one day for no apparent reason. All the other computers were still working fine.

Re: networking...

If you want assistance troubleshooting your problem, start with my posts above.

Question 1: Can you access file/print shares on other PCs on your network?

Question 2: Can you ping other computers on your network?

Requirement 1: Post the results of an ipconfig/all here.

Re: networking...

Make sure your NIC is configured for full duplex, and see if Linksys has an updated NIC driver that you could download.

Re: networking...

I don't get why i would have the problem with a brand new install of windows though, the router has had problems latley, well, acctually since we bought it. I will check for those though. If i reinstall the drivers, will I have to remove the card, install the drivers, then install the card again, like you are supposed to when you first install it?

Edit: Also, how do you get to the windows firewall settings and stuff? I haven't work with that at all.

Re: networking...

Click - Start / Settings / Control Panel / Windows Firewall

You don't have to physically remove the NIC - just go to the device manager and uninstall it. Then scan for hardware changes (or just reboot) and the driver will reload itself.

To update the driver just go to the device manager, right click on the driver and select "update driver...". You will be asked where the new driver is located - just browse to where ever you saved the new driver (assuming you have already downloaded it from Linksys).

Re: networking...

Right, use Windows to manage the Wireless connection once you're sure you have the drivers installed correctly. Connect to your access point. Make sure you can access other network resources on your network. Then see if you can access the internet. If not, can you access it on any other computers on your network?
