86 lebaron

I have an 86 lebaron with abotu 42,000 miles on it. The only problem is the car shuts off. It shuts off for no apparent reason. Sometimes it will not start at all. I will give it 15 minutes without trying to start it than it will. It shuts off sometiems when i have my foot on the gas sometimes as i apply the break. It shuts off when i am sitting at a light. Sometimes it will not shut off for a number of days but than it will happen again. Sometimes after it shuts off it will start right back up others i have had to wait as long as 15-20 minutes. There seems to be no one thing i do to get it to turn off. Any and all ideas or opinions are welcome. My father said it thought it would be a leak in the vac system causing the power loss and shut off.

Re: 86 lebaron

What engine does your car have in it, and is it FI/or carbed?

Based on what you are describing, year and amount of miles, I think I would start by replacing the fuel filter. Unfortunately I am not that familiar with 86's so I can't help with its location.

Check for codes.
Key off to on 3 times and count them flashes.
Post back code no.

It should give you a 2 digit code .
Another blinks besides the 5 blinks?
If it blinked 5 two times it is a code 55 or OK end of test.
May need more testing like check for lose of fuel pressure or lose of spark when it shuts off?

Re: 86 lebaron

If you still think tis the fuel filter, then heres some info from a post i did last year..

Depends on the engine..

Carburetted

On a 2.2ltr engine the filter is located at the back left side of the engine tween the fuel pump and the carb.. slide back the clamps disconnect the hoses and remove the unit.

On a 2.6ltr engine the filter is mounted near the carb same as above but may have to remove the mounting bracket as well.

EFI engines

1st depressurize the system by loosening the filler cap.. unplug the electrical connector from the injector.. use a jumper wire to ground #1 terminal.. use jumper wire from #2 terminal to the pos(+)side of the battery which will open the injector and depressurize the system you can hear the fuel spritzing into the throttle body.. when it stops the system is depressurized..

The fuel filter is located near the fuel tank on the right side of the car.. detach hoses.. remove the bracket holding bolt and remove filter from car.. you might want to wrap rags around the filter and your arms to catch residual fuel that might spill..

check and replace hoses and/or lines if they are damaged..

Replace filter is reverse of removal.. start engine and check for leaks

Good luck m8

PS.. NO SMOKING WHEN DOIN THE JOB.. for twill make a sooty mess of yer car..

Ive not done it on this model so if someone has a better way.. your input would be welcome..
