Question about transmission fluid change

I need to get my Tranny fluid changed and am taking it to the dealer to do so. Everything is going good until they tell me that they don't replace the trans filter they just clean it as they flush. They say theres no need to change this filter. This sounds wrong to me as I have a descent idea about how cars function. Does this sound right to anyone else?

Re: Question about transmission fluid change

Nope, doesn't sound right. I'd find another shop.

Without going into too much detail, over time the filter gets filled up with...well, filtrates - stuff that it filters out like tiny metal particles and dirt. Eventually it gets full and the intake will be sucking unfiltered fluid.

That is, unless they've discovered a new way to back flush the filter and clean it, but I haven't heard of that.

It's fairly easy to drop the pan and change it all yourself. But if you're going to take it to the shop, take it somewhere where they will change the filter.

Re: Question about transmission fluid change

I would do it myself but it doesn't cost me anything but the tax because of my warranty. I kinda figured they were trying to get over. They tried saying that cleaning the filter was as good as replacing it.

Good that it's free. Dig out your owner's manual, and show them where it indicates the filter should be changed at intervals. Since they're a dealer they should abide by their own owner's manual.
