96 2.0 sohc broken timing belt question

My son's friend broke a timing belt on a 96 breeze 2.0 sohc at low speed, but tried to restart the car. What are the odds of bent valves/ broken pistons? Is there any way of checking for this before replacing the belt without taking the head off? thanks

No real safe way.
Best way is to install a new belt and hope for the best.
When installing a new belt where the old one has broke be careful.
You can even bent valve turning cams or crank.
Get a good repair book and follow the procedure real close.
First thing is to get the pistons/crankshaft off of TDC.
Then set the cam shaft and then bring the crankshaft up to TDC and the put the belt on.

Thanks for the reply, the water pump siezed and took the timing belt out. We did as you suggested and replaced the water pump and timing belt, timed it and crossed our fingers. Ran a compression test immediately after timing it (before we put everything back together)and no damage... would suggest to anyone replacing a timing belt is to have the chrysler harmonic balancer puller on hand, it's a must have. I got a loaner from autozone. The car's back together now and runs good, well, as good as one with 168k on it can. regards
