Won't shift into overdrive

Hi all, my '98 Cherokee Sport (4.0l, auto, 115k), will not shift into overdrive at rare times. It only happens after a cold start in cold weather. Check engine light is on when it happens. Once warm, I can stop and start, and then it will usually go into OD, but the check engine light stays on. I let it sit overnight, and the next morning the check engine light is off and OD is fine. No noise or other problems. When working, everything is fine. Dealer is not sure. The one response received on another forum suggested "solenoid". Any thoughts? Thanks.

Cool Re: Won't shift into overdrive

Pull the code...buy a code checker or go the parts store to do it...

The NSS goes defective and will cause a CEL. Seach this forum and web for fixes for the NSS.

Re: Won't shift into overdrive

I had a similiar problem to that but without the check engine light.... would not go into od when it was real cold . A friend works at a dodge dealer and he said there is a sensor in the tranny that won t let it go into od until the tranny gets to a certain temp... mines been doing it for over a year .... but the colder it gets the longer it takes to go to od... hope this was helpful

20 degrees and above it works fine
