Adjusting hand break

aside from my power window problem.. I also have another question. I need to know how to adjust my hand break... for now its catching but, my leaver goes all the way up before it engages in the emergency breaks. How do i remove the back drums.. do i need to bang them out.. can somone give me some simple tips on how too. ??

thank you

Re: Adjusting hand break

There might be a peep hole on the other side of the drum where you can get a brake spoon into and adjust the rear brakes that way. If not, the drums may come off without banging them off, then again they might need some persuasion. I like taking the drums off to adjust the brakes because you can also take care of the rust lip that works its way i-onto the drum.

Re: Adjusting hand break

ok well i did the adjustment by removing the drums... was very easy really.. Now the thing is that when i bang out the second one.. (which I shouldnt have )... a small piece of rust broke off.. on the outside part which was a little rusted all around. I put it back just the same. Do you think that little piece of rust that broke off can be dangerous.. Next time ill use a rubber hammer..duh!!

As lond as it wasn't where the shoes made contact with the drum, you should be alright.

Did your handbrake tighten up though?

Re: Adjusting hand break

Hi and yes my handbrake tightened up enough... now it engages at about the fifth click.. before it was way to high.. and also i noticed my brake pedal is higher too. So everything works fine..
The small rust piece that broke off was very small, like the size of a cigarette butt. I thought it was going to throw off the wheel, but the car went great on the highway.. I thought it was going to change the wheel balance, but it didnt. My car has now close to 53000 kms.. so i found it strange in a way that a piece of rust broke off. ..
