Tie Rod Ends

I was told by a local shop on an inspection that 2 inners and 1 outer is worn. I am planning to change all four myself. The ends look pretty straight forward ( http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...3d801b01fd.jsp ).

Problem is I'm confused on what/where the inner is located. I don't find a procedure on the Ford CD or Autozone. Does the tie rod end consist of only the outer, and an inner exists elsewhere?

With one quick look I can't even see or find the inners. Are they inside the rubber boot on the engine side of the tie rod spindle? Anyone know where the inners are located???

Re: Inner Tie Rod Ends

It may be called another name in the repair booklet, I'm assuming this is for your 99 Taurus???? Sometimes they require a special tool to remove, most likely it can be rented..

Re: Inner Tie Rod Ends

The inner tie rod ends are attached to the rack and pinion steering assembly. Before buying new ones, you may want to inspect the suspension closely and make sure it really is the inner tie rods that are loose rather than the ball joints.

To change them, you will net to remove the bellows from the rack and buy or borrow a special socket to loosen the old inner tie rod ends. You will probably need a breaker bar to shear off the retaining pin that is used to keep the inner tie rod from loosening. Once you get the old tie rod removed, you'll then need to remove any remaining pieces of the pin retainer. Then install the new inner tie rod and tap in the new retaining pin (should come with the new inner tie rod).

Once you get all that replaced, you will need to get the car aligned.
