Changing Head Gasket

Me and my friend are changing the head gasket in his car and we need to know if we need to replace/remove the timing belt to take the heads off?

I dont exactly see the point of "get a life" seems pretty rude and stupid. A simple answer to his question would have probably been a little easier.
