Pulling the engine, 91 AWD

Ok, as I stripped the parts car, I found what I percive to be the easiest way to pull an engine. This is a step by step account of how we got it out not using a cherry picker. NOTE: It will be hard to get it in the reverse of this procedure, but I am sure you could do it with a bit of enginuity. I would recommed using a cherry picker to put it back in.

STEP 1: While the car is on the ground

-Break the lugs loose
-Break the big nut in the center of the spindle loose and/or take it off

STEP 2: Raise the car - Order isnt completely necessary, but you should do the top things before the bottom things

-Drain all fluids (coolant, engine oil, tranny fluid, t case)
-Take off the accessory belts
-Take off all the intercooler piping
-Take out the radiator and hoses
-Take out the filter/MAF/intake hose
-Take the fuel feed line and return line off of the fuel rail
-Unplug all the engine harnesses from everything
-Take off the turbo along with its oil and coolant lines
-Take off the down pipe
-Take out the two crossmembers under the engine
-Remove the power steering pump and set the lines aside
-Take off the alternator
-Take off the throttle cable
-Take off the shift linkages, if you cant get those clips out you can just unbolt the bracket to the tranny
-Take out the speedo cable
-Remove the head with manifolds attached, be sure to use the right sequence
-Remove the AC compressor
-Unbolt the bottom of the strut assembly from the spindle on each side
-Remove the axles. You will be able to rotate the spindle down and to the back, then push the end of the axle out of the spindle. On the passenger side, all you need to do is pull the axle out. On the drivers side, the half shaft is bolted to the block on the back. Once those are out, you will be able to pop the axle out and remove it. If the stick in the tranny, a solid whack on the other end of the axle or a crow bar should provide enough coersion to get it off.
-Take off the T case. There are 5 bolts, two on the bottom, two on the top, and one more on the front side. The top two will be easier to attack from the top

Unless I have forgotten something, you are now ready to drop the engine/tranny.

STEP 3: Drop the engine and tranny

You will want the car in the air, but not too high as you will be dropping the

-Support the engine from underneath with a jack (remember, put a wood block or a few peices of cardboard between the jack and the oil pan)
-Unbolt the engine mounts and remove the brackets on the front and back mounts, but leave the bolt in tranny mount. Lower the engine. Then jack the tranny up until you can pull out the bolt. Lower that end of the tranny. At this point, the tranny/engine should be resting on parts of the frame. This is why you dont want the car super high in the air, you want to minimize the chance of damaging the oil pan. If you are outside, the ground should be soft enough to drop the engine onto. If you are in a shop or on a hard surface I would recommend putting something under there to keep it from falling hard such as a box of blankets or something like that. All you need to do is use a pry bar or one of those cross members to move it until it falls down out of the engine bay.
-You now just need to jack the car up high and pull it out from under the car! To get the extra height, you may want to jack it up by under the doors. Then just yank 'er out!

If you have any questions, just shoot me a PM. A Haynes manual is a good reference doing this, however I did it with out one.

Re: Pulling the engine, 91 AWD

Do you do the same thing on a 2g? remove from the bottom?

Because I have done 3 2g's now and i removed them all really easy from the top! Not any troubles at all.

Im not trying to steal your thread at all man, just showing some 2g stuff also for people. I did not want to start a thread to show some pics. Is this ok?

I pulled the engine with leaving the tranny in the car
^^^Do not attempted unless you know what you are doing lol

VERY NICE WRITE UP BY THE WAY!!!!

Re: Pulling the engine, 91 AWD

I just chose to do it this way since I dont have a cherry picker at the spot to do it from the top. Going back in it will come in from the top. Thanks for the props man.
