90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
1990 3.3 with 116k miles, the engines will mometarely cut out at times and immediatly restart and continue on, other times it will stall completly, when this happens and restart is tried it will start and stall immediatly. If I wait a few minutes it will restart and continue on untli next time. The next time seems to be an unknown factor it time or miles driven. This also happens if I leave the car just idleing in the driveway. When the engine is in the failing condition, I was able to check for spark useing an inductive timing light and spark appears to be there. I have replaced the crankcase psotion sensor. There also appears to be gas present to the small tire like fill valve near the injectors. I am getting engine codes of 14 and 42 - HELP !

Re: 90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
Welcome to AF!
The valve near the injectors is the shradder valve. That is where you connect a gauge to test your fuel pressure. Which I would suggest you do as it could be why you are having troubles. The fuel pressure should be around 40-47 PSI. If you havent changed the fuel fitler in the last 30-40K miles you should also do that, as it is recomended in those intervals. Hope that helped, Keep me posted what you find.

Re: 90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
the codes you described are as follows code 14 coolant sensor or circuit/high temperature indicated, code 42 Electronic spark timing circuit in bypass mode, you could check your coolant level, if it is ok, then test the coolant sensor if the resistance is not approximately 500 ohms( between hot and cold)the sensor is faulty. Hopefully this can steer you in the right direction, good look.

Re: 90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
So far I've replaced the shaft sensor, fuel pump, strainer and fitler, temp sensor, pcv. The code 42 has seemed to have disapered but the 14 kept coming back, tonight I replaced the engine computer, will see tomorrow if that took care of it. I also found tonight that it appears that the heater core may have a leak, antifreeze in the passenger side carpet.Does anyone know if the heater core comes out by dashboard removal or from in the engine compartment ?
I checked with auto zone, they do not have the guage on the loaner program, they want $49.00 for the guage. The shaft sensor is no fun at all, alignment into the rings of the harmonic balancer was hard. This car is not long for this world ! |

Code 42 is "Bypoass or Electronic Spark Timing (EST) circuit". Have you checked coil packs and/or Ignition Module?..just a guess.also have u added fuel injector cleaner to gas?..also listen with screwdriver to each fuel injector placed one end on injector other to ear with engine running..see if each one makes clicking noise... Around my place fuel gauge is not free loaner..its like $39.95 to buy..dont know around your place..good luck! If the engine stalls when the car is not moving, it is the tcc solenoid located in the automatic transmission..not supposed to be hard to replace. |

Re: 90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
code 14 is "coolant sensor or circuit/high temperature indicated"...
Is it overheating ? If not then the sensors or the wiring is bad. Code 42 could be tripped by the #14 .

I did add injector cleaner to the gas tank, I also had auto zone print out their diag codes for 14 and 42 also comes with trouble guides. Both 14 and 42 can be related to the temp sensor or wiring but also the computer. I also had auto zone check the ignition module, they tested 10 time to stress it and heat it up. If I was not so thick headed the trouble guides for 14 where the temp sensor, wiring short or computer. I took the long road but I think the computer finally fixed, I drove back and forth to wok today (30 minutes each way) and not a single stall. Thanks for everyone's help and hopefully this will take care of it. I am sure the guys at auto zone are glad I fixed it also (spent a lot of time there).

Re: 90 Cutlass Ciera Stalls, will restart after several minutes
Hope this did the trick for you.
The cpu's on these models of N-bodies werent made very well IMO. Back in the day I've replaced 100's ![]() check the wiring for the temp sensor realy well. Make sure the conector is clean too.
