Amp issues.

I'm having a bit of trouble with my amp...it's a Kicker ZX550.2, running 2 CVRs with Dual 2Ohm Voice Coils, it worked perfectly until this afternoon . Problem is, the amp isn't getting enough power, it hits fine for about 5 seconds, and then the power light dimms and the subs barely work, and by barely I mean you have to put your finger on them to tell that they are even getting any power. I've got 8 guage wire running to the amp, which should support up to 650W or so (came with a Monster Audio kit), but like I said, it worked perfectly until I started the car this afternoon, I've checked for loose connections/blown fuses, nothing, the ground wire, as well as the power wire are well attached! Any suggestions?

Re: Amp issues.

Where did you get the wiring kit. And 8 guage is a little to thin to support that much current draw, i remember in my old corolla, i melted the power wires going into the amp. Id do 4 gauge, a true 4 gauge kit not a schoshe one. And for god sakes dont buy a rockford kit id buy a scoshe cause i dont see a purpose to pay $80 for 4 guage wiring kit due to name.

But yeah that wire is way to small to support that much power.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.

Re: Amp issues.

It's all Monster Cable, ordered from an online retailer, but it worked perfectly before, and now the amp won't power itself on with the toggle switch, so I'm guessing I have a bad connection somewhere with a wire, going to check that first thing tommorow morning.

Re: Amp issues.

How long has it been in the car, wires ability to carry current can pretty much break down to the point where its like a kink in a garden hose, the main problem is the cars environment, engine gets hot cools off, all this happening all the time speeds this up.

If its still getting power then its something else.

Re: Amp issues.

It's been in the car maybe 4 weeks at most, am going to give the amp a try in a friends car that is running 4 gauge wire, I now think it's the power wire.
