Exhaust suggestions/recommends

Been looking around for exhaust options. I have already ordered for my car the shiftplus, will be ordering the intake within a week, and have now turned my sights on exhaust. I find that most companies want a freakin arm and leg for systems, even just cat-back setups. So I called a few buddies who are in amateur and pro-race building, they suggested getting the pieces one at a time and it would be cheaper. I found a header for good price, figured on going with a magnaflow converter, and a flowmaster muffler. Exhaust piping is easy, I have a friend who can get me that to connect it all together. One of my questions is will a resonator be needed, I don't want a ricer sound at all. General consensus around the base here is that a flowmaster won't require a resonator to take that buzzing ricer sound out. And if anyone has suggestions or recommendations I am more than open to them. Thanx in advance

ill tell you the same thing i was told. if you dont want the ricer sound, get a resonator hands down. the longer the resonator, the less rice it will sound...

I've heard that a lot, but resonator install has been mainly associated with "coffee cans" from my experience. Do all mufflers w/o a resonator cause the ricer buzz on our cars?

What is a Catalytic Concerter and what is a resonator?

Catalytic converter basically is for emissions and the is a catalyist inside them which makes the exahust emissions less harmful.

A resonator is pretty much a pre-muffler, muffler. Long and straight through with the outter portion containing noise absorbing material.


"coffee can" or fart can mufflers are not the only ones that need them. I have 2 oval style mufflers and i need them. Any car will sound like crap without them.

Catalytic converter reduces emissions and has been required since the origin of tree huggers . A resonator is basically a silencer that takes that ricer "angry mosquito" noise out of the exhaust signature on 4-bangers. If you get a new converter, get a high-flow, and the resonator s up to you depending on your preference. I'm getting one cause I don't want to get maced by a can of OFF while I'm driving down the road.

So my stock car doesn't have a catalytic converter than? And where is the resonator located? So if i get a complete dual exhuast cat-back system, it will include a catalytic converter and a resonator?

No it will no included a cat. They give you everything to mount it to your cat. Depending on what brand you go with you may be able to get away not having one. Its really only when you install a new header on our cars is when you need one. However, the RKSPORT exahust ones, YOU NEED A RESONATOR for that one.

Yes, your stock car has a converter on it, came with one from the factory. To find a resonator on your exhaust, crawl underneath and look. From your header back there will be a straight pipe going into the cat converter, it looks like a "square" oval shape, and from there pipe runs to the muffler, which is near the end. Anything other than those two things would more than likely be a resonator.

i dont know how much you want to spend but i got a catback from rksport and it wasnt that much $. i have had it on for about 2 years now and never had a problem and it doesnt have a ricer sound to it at all it actually has a deep sound.

Hmm, when i install my mufflers, can i take the catalytic converter off? Cuz if all it does is reduce emission, but its restricting air, so if i take it off, i will get a higher flow...

Depends on how emissions is done in your area. If they check for the cat, you're pretty much . It is illegal to have it removed. Also, your computer will have a onstant code thrown from the secondary O2 sensor, due to the fact that one monitors how well your cat is functioning. There are simulators out there to "trick" the computer into thinking your cat is there and functioning, but as stated earlier, if there is an underbody inspection where you're from then they will see it removed and fail you. In all honesty, I would go with a high-flow or performance catalytic converter, and you'll be good to go. My
