00' Tahoe ABS Prob

Hey every one, I have a 00' Tahoe 5.3 4wd and the ABS is activating unjustly when I'm coming to a stop prob about 2 mph. Any Ideas?

WSS? Sorry Merlin I'm not familiar with the term, could you be a little more specific and is there something I can do to correct this? Thanks for the help.

WSS is short for a wheel speed sensor.
Check the wiring and plugins on them first.
If the ABS light is on it should have a code for which one.
If not you may need a ABS capable scanner to point to which WSS sensor or what is giving problem.
Any recent work around done in the wheel/tire area?
All 4 wheels match pair?

Wheel Speed Sensor.
Mt 2500 is correct on his information.
Typically unwanted ABS activation is caused by a loss of WSS signal, there are many causes and it may not set a code in the EBCM.

Thanks Guys, good info. I just put 4 new skins on, so they match, No ABS light so no codes. The guy I just bought it from said there was a new rear put in so I guess I have to get to looking around it. Thanks again, I'll post the prob and fix when I find it.

Isn't there a recall for this for corrosion around the WSS? I know my 2001 was recalled for this. It may depend on the state also, since I think it was mainly northern states.

These vehicles may have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. If the brakes are applied while the vehicle is traveling at a speed of greater than 6 km/h (3.7 mph) but less than 16 km/h (10 mph), the corrosion may cause an unwanted anti-lock brake system (ABS) activation. If this condition occurred where stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.

I just had this issue in my '99 Yukon and replaced both WSS and it fixed the issue.

I took them out and looked at them, they both looked pretty bad and they were about $100 each. The way I figured, it would have cost me more to get someone to diagnose which one was bad and replace one than to replace them both.

If you can change your brakes, you can do this job. Took me about 1/2 hr. On a '99 they are behind the rotor and protested by a metal shield that is held in w/two bolts you can get at w/out removing the hub.

I'd guess the '00 is pretty similar.

I just had the same ABS problem - 99 Tahoe 4WD, 116K miles. Right front sensor would develop 600 mv, and left front sensor would only develop 200 mv (turning wheel about 1 rpm). From the recall notice I saw, and from service bulletins, 200 mv is too low.
Coarse my dealer and GM deny there is any "OPEN" notice on the issue.
So I bought the sensor for left front wheel, installed, and measured ($170 seems outrageous to me). A little more output, but still aprox 200 mv.
Problem is much better, but there still is slight extra pedal travel and sometimes a very slight ABS activation when coming to a stop. New pads and shoes.

I wonder if Merlin or MT think I have a bad sensor, or if the problem is on the disc in the axle. I assume there is a disc w rotating permanent magnet that could loose it's level of magnetism.

btw, Am currently droping gas tank for intermitent fuel pump operation - Your comments on this have been very helpful. Plan to carefuly check the connector - strongly suspect it. Also determined (coolant has been disappearing) - may have intake manifold leak. - It's been a great 2 weeks.

Not sure if my '97 is the same as your '00, but I had the same problem, and I got some good advice from this forum and corrected the problem easily. I've only got ABS in the front, but I suppose rear ABS would be the same. I removed both front sensors, plugged the holes in the hubs, where the sensors go, and wire brushed the rust from the hub where the sensors sit, and cleaned the sensor itself. Sprayed hub area with cold galvinizing coating, and when dry, reinstalled sensors. One of the O-rings on one of the sensors got damaged and it was a pup finding new ones of the right thickness and diameter. Dealer parts dept. didn't list an o-ring only, I would have to buy a sensor to get an o-ring. I finally found a place locally that actually made the proper o-rings and I bought a dozen. As far as what mv reading I had on the sensors before I started and after, I don't recall off hand, but I've got it in the garage. Anyway, my problem was solved. The amount of rust that is under the sensors doesn't seem like it would affect anything, but believe me it does. My brakes worked fine, truck sat for 4 months during the winter, and upon putting it back in service, the ABS problem developed. It was a cheap, easy fix. Hope your as lucky!

FYI: Some 50,000 miles earlier, I had the same problem occur, didn't know what it was, so I took it to the dealer. They said both front hubs needed to be replaced because of worn bearings, and that's what was causing the sensors to be out of calibration. They warrenteed one hub, but the other cost me $400. I wanted the one hub, just to check out the bearings, and I couldn't find a problem with it, as far as I could tell. When the ABS problem occured again, and I fixed it myself, I rechecked the old hub. Yes, the mv reading on the sensor was low, but once I cleaned up the rust issue, the mv reading was back within range. If I would have known then what I know now, I would have $400 in my pocket instead of the dealers. Sorry for venting my frustrations.

I'm having the same problem on my 2000 Tahoe 4X4. I cleaned both front sensors and the problem is still the same. Is there something else that I should be looking for. I checked all the connections to the sensors and they seem fine. could there be a problem with the rear that is setting off the abs? I don't have a capable scanner to tell me which sensor is acting up.
