'86 SE V6 starter question

'86 Fiero SE 2.8L w/ AT.
Car beloings to a friend, and I am trying to help him with repairs. The starter was replaced about 2 months ago, and worked fine until a couple of days ago. Now, when the car is shut off, the solenoid continues running. The wiring looks OK, the battery and alternator are new, but unless the battery is unhooked after shut-down, the battery gets drained.
I replaced the 2 month old starter with a fresh unit today, as I suspected the solenoid was faulty, but the problem remains....
I suspect a failure in the ignition switch, but I am just guessing, and don't want to throw money at the wrong thing.
Has anyone else experienced this, or know what to suspect?
Many thanks in advance,

Re: '86 SE V6 starter question

it sounds like it could be a lot of things...

1.) Relays from ??? to ????

2.) the ignition switch could be keeping it engaged as well

3.) Could be a ground problem or a bare wire touching something...

among other things I dont know which routes you have looked at but I will do my research and see....

-- sorry I didnt know it right off hand

Re: '86 SE V6 starter question

Thanks for the reply. I agree with your thinking of the ignition switch, or a ?? relay....is the ign. switch difficult to replace? Are there any relays you know of between the switch and the starter itself? The shop manual talks lots about the fusible links in these areas (which look fine) but says nothing about relays.

Re: '86 SE V6 starter question

I am not sure exactly... I think it could just be the ignition module but Id check them and also check all of your ground connections if you have to reinforce the ground with 4ga speaker wire with the loops crimped on... great advise from another fiero enthusiast... a lot of time its just that simple... as for relay I am unsure where/ how many there are...
