On my way to work this morning my 2002 pontiac grand am just shut off and died. I tried givivng it a jump and nothing. Since the car died while i was driving could this be a alternator problem?

Re: Alternator Problem?

Thanx for the reply! The car just died while I was driving. When I try to start it the car sounds like it wants to start but it wont turn over.

Re: Alternator Problem?

Test your battery with a voltmeter.
Should be around 13+ volts.

You can also take the alternator to most part stores and get it tested.

Also when it died,
did the security light on the dash come on or flash ?

Re: Alternator Problem?

hmm...the thing that makes me believe its not the alternator is that you said you tried to jump it and it still didnt start. I would imagine the car wouldve started then maybe died again after you disconnected the jumper cables. Did the battery light turn on on your dash before it died?

Start simple and make sure your battery connection is good. Sometimes some of that "gunk" can build up on the battery posts and ruin the connection.

Re: Alternator Problem?

I didnt mean the battery/alternator light.

The security light on the left side gauge ...?

If so This would indicate your passlock system has malfuntioned.
Try turning the key to the "ON" position for 10 min, turn it off for 1 min.
Then repeat this two more times.
For A total of three X.

This should reset the passlock,
though I dont know if this is your only problem yet.
