any transmission experts here?

My son has an '89 Taurus sedan 3.0 engine, AXOD transmission. For a while when he first started it he had to shift to reverse and then drive, then it worked normally. Tonight he sucked out some transmission fluid and then added some of that fancy transmission additive that is supposed to improve shifting. He then made about a two mile round trip and returned to his yard. Now the car won't engage in gear at all. The tranmisson was not slipping or anything previously. Any ideas what the problem may be?

It's toast. If you think the car is worth it - rebuilt or get another one from somewhere

Re: any transmission experts here?

Take it to a tranny shop and ask them to drop the tranny pan and check the screen for shavings or debris and I think they can do a flluid pressure check. That way you'll know for sure 'cause if the tranny fluid wasn't changed for a long time it gets funky and can cause problems. If nothing unusual on the screen or in the pan sump maybe a $60. fluid change will solve the problem but if it needs a rebuild then you're looking at $1,500. or better.

If that be the case, sharpen your pencil and figure how many miles on it and remaining life expecentacy and best rebuild the tranny or junk it for parts and get another ride. Good engines in the Tauri and if you take reasonable care of them they go $200K mi or better no sweat.
