Cheapest place for a half-shaft

Nothing broken (yet), just precautionary, but...

Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy a Xterra half-shaft? Autozone has a remanufactured one for $99 + $80 core charge.

I think that that is about as cheap as you will be able to find it anywhere. You could also call Schucks locally and see what they get for them.

I just installed the Calmini LSD in my front axle and have a 3" lift installed, so I decided a spare half-shaft might be a good idea. The problem is most places cannot get one. The local Autozone and Napa both called their suppliers and were told that the manufacturer they used did not have enough core parts to make any because the truck design is so new. CarQuest showed 1 in a warehouse in California that I ordered. It's $195 with a core return of $113. The good thing all of these places said was that they would honor a core return at any point in the future provided I had a receipt for the original purchase. Napa's manager added that the core would be what ever the price is at that time and not necessarily the core price at the time of purchase.

Have you tried checking the local salvage yards. Check www.car-part.com. They have some listed there from $40 to $250.

I got a used alternator from one for $45 + $10 core. $55 for an extra alternator was pretty cheap in my book. I'm going to see if I can get it re-built at a higher amperage.
