WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Should be interesting... I believe it's a GT convertible, but with "Cobra ground effects..." In the pics, other than the "Mustang GT" script tho, I can't really see a difference in the ground effects. Colour will be Ford Sonic Blue.

Just some general body cleanup and mold line removals. Not much to look at yet but thought I'd get the thread started.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

I think the biggest difference will come in the form of the front bumper and the additional peice that goes right in front of the rear wheel wells. With the "scoop" looking peices. Just remove those from the font bumper and dont add them to the sides and you should be good (however, there is a place for the upper portion of the addition for the side of the car right under the rub strip behind the door) Do you have the 93 cobra kit? if not, I can take some pictures of the cobra front bumper and moldings to show any differences, just let me know!

Thanks Russ, but his car is sort of a mix of several body parts, so I'm just gonna wait for a front 3/4 view... but from what I can see of his pics, there is NO scoops on front of the rear wheel wells... it looks identical from what I can see.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Nice......

Note the LX tail lights on the 1:1......not the GT lenes that come with the kit. No mirrors either!
Those are Cobra side skirts and rear bumper, the front is a GT/Cobra bumper.....the Cobra had a grill insert between the headlights thats the only differnce.

As a Foxbody mustang owner I am excited to see this build by you!

Keep the pics coming.

Ah, I had forgot he mentioned those taillights too... What's different, are they just red all the way across?

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

If I'm not mistaken, Cobras also have ROUND foglamps, as opposed to square ones.

Also, I like the door alignment on the 1:1

Looking forward to seeing the build however.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

These are the LX tail lights you need to duplicate as seen here on my 1:1

Deltableh is mistaken, all 87-93 GT and 93 Cobra's share the same front bumper and round fog lamps. The only differnce in the front bumper is the grill insert that the Cobra's had.

I am half way done with a AMT 1/24 Mustang and cut out the tail light section molded on the body, replaced with some modified Cobra lenses okiemodelbuilder sent me so very generously

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Some more body clean up, filled in the "MUSTANG GT" scripts on the bumpers and side skirts, as well as the "Ford" badges front and rear. Also have to fill the holes for the big whale-tail spoiler was supposed to go.

Engine starting to come together, of course it's a two-piece design so I have to sand and fill the seams along the oil pan. Engine looks basically stock except the upper intake and the turbo plumbing.

He also relocated the battery to the trunk, and it was a molded in detail in the engine bay, so I had to dremel it out... A little kit bashing required, since he has an ignition coil mounted on that side of the engine bay. The sheet styrene will look a lot better when it's all sanded and glued in place, but there's the start.

Re: WIP - Customer's 5 Litre Mustang Convertible Drag Car

Just a quick update while the paint on the body dries... the engine has a stock lower plenum followed by stacks, and a sheet metal upper plenum... so here's the stacks mocked up with styrene rod... Once the glue dries they'll be sanded or band-sawed evenly. Distributor mounted and wired, and of course the headers on backwards for the turbo plumbing...
