99 SE Replacing Shocks

Has anyone found a difference or benefits in replacing shocks? I have a 99 SE with original equipment and it does seem to be a little bumpier backing down the driveway and over rough roads but that could be me just getting older.

You have McPherson struts not just shocks. They do wear out with mileage. So it depends on your current mileage. I recommend replacing the struts at 60-70K miles. They wear out progressively and all you do is get used to it but it will get to a point where they will be very annoying and you will feel every bump in the road not to mention degraded handling.

Thanks for the advice. I have almost 100k miles. I've not replaced struts or shocks. Would this be a DIY kind of job or something better left to the pros? Are special tools needed? Thanks!

I've done them DIY but if you have any doubts then have a pro do it. With 100K miles you are definitely due. Recommended to replace the front first, then rear. Once the strut assembly is removed from the car a strut coil spring compressor is required to remove the strut from the coil springs. Normal hand tools with metric sockets for the rest of the bolts at the strut tower and steering knuckle.

When struts are replaced be sure to get a wheel alignment to verify the settings are still in spec or need adjustment. Good luck!
