A/C Only works on High

00 impala 3.4L

My A/C only works while it is on the highest setting (4 & 5). Its not a big problem I was just wondering if it was an easy fix. I bought the climate control switches but I never got around to installing it. Has anyone ever had this problem? I took it to the dealer and they told me it was the A/C blower under the hood. They have lied to me in the pass so I dont believe em.

Re: A/C Only works on High

Is the A/C itself not working or just the fan (blower)? Try leaving the A/C off and just turning the blower on... Does the blower run in positions 1 thru 5 or just 4 & 5?.. A very common problem is the blower motor resistor burning out... When it burns out only the high blower speed works... Replace the resistor (it's a PITA, under the dash, job) and you are good to go...

As said resistor is the usual problem.
And often a overlooked deal is the cabin filter if it has one.
Moisture and dirt in it will lead to blower motor /resistor problems.

Yep... If the area around the cabin air filter is clogged up with dirt, leaves, debris, etc., water will not drain out properly... Instead it will find it's way down and onto the blower motor resistor causing it to short and burn out... Common problem...

The AC does produce cool air. The fan just does not blow unless its on setting 4 & 5. So can I fix this myself? So Your saying I would have to take apart the whole dash.... THANKS FOR THE REPLYS!

Maybe not quiet the hole dash.
Sorry I do not have info on replacing it but a good factory manual or a All Data sub. would led you threw it.

Also you might check the Auto Zone web site sometimes they have a how to on some things.
Good Luck MT

Re: A/C Only works on High

Go to the "How To" section of www.impalahq.com ... You will find a piece on how to replace the A/C blower motor... Somewhere in that area behind the blower motor is the motor resistor I believe... The hard part is you kind of need to lie upside down, on your back, to work in that area!

Re: A/C Only works on High

Change the blower resistor. It has two small screws that are hard to remove. You could plug the new one in before you remove the old one to make sure it will fix the problem (It will) for piece of mind.

Is this it?
http://www.impalahq.com/HowTo/Blower_motor.html
It says the blower motor is inside behind a glove box panel.

Re: A/C Only works on High

That is the blower motor not the resistor. Your motor works. The resistor sets the speeds and is usually located near the blower. Behind it near the top of the carpet.

Re: A/C Only works on High

The website "impalahq.com" has joined with the North American Impala Owners Assoc. (NAIOA), and the new web link is: http://impalahq.naioa.com/index2.html
Lots of helpful info on the site.
