1990 starts,runs thens stops
I have a 90 model rodeo extra cab.The problem is that it will start ,run for about 10sec then dies.If you hold the key onto the start position it will keep running.(I know thats rough to do that )but it may help in the fault finding process.

Re: 1990 starts,runs thens stops
a clue to you about what is happening:
when you start the isuzu, the fuel pump gets it's electrical charge from the battery. after a few seconds, it gets it from the alternator. you can check this by just turning the key on without starting. you will hear the fuel pump run for a couple or so seconds and then stop. so. your fuel pump is working. that means two areas to check are: 1. the fuel pump relay and 2. the alternator isuzu alternators have an extra added circuit that feeds the fuel pump. often this circuit can cause the fuel pump not to operate. do you have any other symptoms of the alternator going -- screwy dash lights, dim headlights at idle, (automatic)trans problems, low charging voltage, etc ? hth P.S. and if you say you just replaced your alternator with a bigboxpartsstore rebuilt, i'll bet that's the problem. //bc

Re: 1990 starts,runs thens stops
Every light is on ,on the dash,eg,Check engine,Battery, Brake..the charging volts are good,,,forgot to mention that the utes been rolled on two occasions. Apart from that it was working brillant the day before with the same lights on the dash..it did stop a few days before and i found a blown fuse..so i pulled all unessary fuses and it worked great.Being just a work ute now is there any way i can trick it to just start and run in the crudest way

Re: 1990 starts,runs thens stops
i suppose there would be a way to bypass the alternator to feed the fuel pump directly. the problem is, it's designed thru the alternator so the pump will quit when the engine does -- it's a safety thing. maybe you could accomplish the same thing another way.
ontheotherhand, the alternator is on its way out; you might as well take care of it now, imo. you will probably start to experience even more alternator-connected symptoms. //bc
