96 Cutlass Stalling & Starting problem, please help!!!
I have a 96 Cutlass Supreme with 3.1L 6V engine. I'm from Minnesota, but I've been traveling around the east coast the last 2 weeks. My car has served me well just until recently. It would turn off on its own, when I come to a stop and wouldnt start. When I start it through jumper cables or jumper box, it would do it fine. But as soon as I turn on the headlights, it would turn itself off again. A lot of people are saying that the battery is dead, but it's actually a fairly new one that I got 5 months ago. Others are saying that it's the alternator. I'm very confused. And one more thing that i noticed. Everytime that the car is just about to turn off, the ABS light would pop up. Please help me and give me advice. I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: 96 Cutlass Stalling & Starting problem, please help!!!
Welcome to AF. First of all why not get it somewhere and have the battery and alternator tested,? These are typical symptoms, testing for this problem must be done in the field.

sounds like alt,or starter..if you can keep it running and get to autozone or advanced auto stores they will check the alt,and starter for free.. and have you made sure cables are clean going to battery????..good luck....

Re: 96 Cutlass Stalling & Starting problem, please help!!!
i have the same year and model of cutlass but my problem was when it would shut off, it would buck and kick, i recently solved the problem when i looked around the engine compartment by looking for loose hoses, vacuum lines, loose cables, and even the battery. try some of these ideas to see if they work for you
