Question What size speakers can fit?

I've run a search, and can't find much on this. Anyway, my mother-in-law's tape deck died. She's asked me if I can put in an inexpensive cd player in her 96 Regal sedan, 4 door. I've found a low-end Alpine that should do just fine, but I can't just stop at that. According to Crutchfield, the rear deck takes 6x9s, and the doors take 5.25s.

Do the stock speakers have 4 mounting screws or 3?
Will I have to make any kind of adapter rings?
Also, does anyone know if 6.5s will fit in the door with an adapter ring?
Would there be enough room behind the door panel for a 6.5?
Will an adapter ring have to made for certain 6x9 speakers for the back?

Since this is my mother-in-law, I'm not looking for the most high end equipment out there. I was actually looking at some low end fosgate models. I put some in my wife's and sister's-in-law car, and they sound great.

I already found out I'm going to have to remove the rear seat cushion to get to the rear speakers. Makes me miss my 94 olds cutlass supreme.

Any help on the above questions would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

The stock speakers are held in by 4 screws. The speakers should be direct replacements and you shouldn't need any adapter rings to replace the factory speakers with newer ones. I would stick with the stock sizes for the doors as you will probably have clearance issues whether you use an adaptor ring or not. This is a pretty tight fit to begin with so why make your life complicated.

i ghetto fabbed some 6.5s in there the biggest worry i had was the door pannel, i ended up grinding out some of the plastic to make sure it didnt rub. if you find some semi flush mounting speakers then there is no worries, i think i driller holes for the screws tho. this was a 2000 regaL

Re: What size speakers can fit?

You dont have to take out the rear cushon to get at the back speakers. Pop the trunk and lay in it on your back, thats all I did in my `96 Custom

Because I can't just replace the unit. I'm just kind of like that.
