Loose banging metal noise! Front left wheel
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum, and I recently bought my first Isuzu Trooper. It is a 1998 automatic TOD 4x4 Trooper. I am having a problem and would like to know if someone can help? I am not a mechanic so please forgive any misnamed parts or tools I might mention. A day ago I heard some loose banging metal as I would be driving, it would get louder as drove over bumps and small minor potholes. I isolated the noise to the front left wheel of the vehicle. At first I thought it might be a loose bolt on the brakes, but after I got under the vehicle and inspected, I found something worse. Apparently the front left axel came out of its normal position, and is extremely loose (It’s wobbling up and down during vehicle driving which is causing the noise). Can someone explain if this is a serious problem, how can I fix it, and should I take it to my dealership, can I drive it around like this??? Below are Detailed photos that I took with my camera phone.... Picture 1 - The front right wheel which is in good condition. ![]() Picture 2 - Front Left Wheel Overall ![]() Picture 3 ![]() Picture 4 ![]() Picture 5 ![]() Thanks in advance for anyones Help!

Re: Loose banging metal noise! Front left wheel
The spring clip on the end of the axle that holds it in place came off. You need to put it back on. With any luck you havent gotten a bunch of junk in the bearings and messed them up. Same thing happened to one of mine on my rodeo.
Not sure how much different the set up is with TOD but on my rodeo its pretty easy. Pull the wheel off, remove the drive flange, replace spring clip.

Re: Loose banging metal noise! Front left wheel
thanks Dave, and sorry about this post I should have put it in the Trooper section, but didn't even notice!
So replaceing the spring clip will lock the axel back in place, because it is extremely wobbly and bangs everytime i hit a bump or hole? |

Re: Loose banging metal noise! Front left wheel
Yup that will hold it back in place. You might need to get a new clip. Mine came off because it was stretched and didnt fit tight enough. Mine used a 26mm, dont know for sure what size the trooper with TOD uses. I ended up using a 1" which is slightly smaller since I couldnt find a 26mm. Its tight but it works.

Re: Loose banging metal noise! Front left wheel
Good thing you posted this because I just noticed the same noise on mine last night but couldnt find where it was coming from. Im replacing my boot tomorrow so I'll take care of the spring clip along with it.
Where can I buy the spring clip? Should any auto part store have them? |
