My 95 Grand am is not starting!!!!HELP

My 95 Grand Am is having some sort of electrical problem but i don't know where to look for the problem. My car won't start but will turn over. I can't seem to get any spark to the plugs and my distributer is new it was checked out to be good and it also has a new battery, alternator, computer and fuel pump. When the problem started my dash light is on, on one side of the panel when key is turned off even when i have the lights turned off than when i turn the lights on the other side comes on and the first side shuts off. I can't figure out which wires need to be checked. I recently removed the motor to put a new transmission in. I changed the fuel pump because when i finished it would fire but no gas would get into the cylinders and now that i have a new fuel pump it won't fire. Oh yeah the fan will turn over once when you try starting and when you turn the key off it tries to spin again and you hear this poping sound. Another reason is that my car fell during the process of puting the transmission back because of faulty lift, is there something that could have been knocked lose? Possibly in the wiring.

check your battery. When they get old and weak they tend to make the vehicle do weird things.

Welcome to AF !

What engine do you have?

Sounds like you might not have everything hooked up right.

Since you swaped engines you're gonna have to dig around and do some testing. Try checking the crank & cam position sensors. And make sure the ignition sysytems connected and working properly.

Re: My 95 Grand am is not starting!!!!HELP

I have a 3.1. I swaped out the transmission. It still had the original motor. Do you know wires need to be checked? I might end up taking the motor back lose and just check all wires. But doing that takes a lot of time. Time i don't have right now. If anyone has any ideas please tell. Thanks

You need to test your ignition system first.
Each coil, ignition module all its corisponding connectors.

Double check your fuses too!

You can Also check for trouble codes.
Heres a link from the N-body problems diagnosis for the ODB I & II and some codes listed.

One side note your 95 may be a hybrid which you need a good scanning tool to check for DTC's,
or the stealership can check them for a nominal fee.

pull a spark plug wire off its plug. Get another spark plug and put it in the boot. Hold it close to a bare metal spot on the cars chassis. Have someone crank the engine over. There should be bright blue spark in the plugs gap. Do not do this in direct sunlight cause it would be hard to see and dont touch any part of plug with your bare hand. This is only the most basic part of checking your ignition system. If no spark then it gets a bit more detailed.

There was no spark. Now what? Can it be a bad crank or cam shaft sensor?

You are going to need a voltmeter and some free time.

here is a link that'll giv you what you need to test the coils and the ignition module.
Driveability & Emissions Controls or electronic engine controls.

Good Luck!

sounds like you are just throwing parts at it. Stop now and get someone to help do a diagnostic on the rest of the ignition system.

I think its going to need to goto the stealership.

Because I believe thier is a relearn procedure for these , and its not something you Or I can do.
Especially since this is a hybrid ODB I-II system, you'll need the dealers help here I think!

Good Luck and let us know what you find out!

Happy New Year !
