15 grand? Whats your whip?

Out of sheer bordem, I decided to post this thread. I'm joining the Air Force in the near future and I was talking to my uncle, who served in the Air Force for many years, mentioned that he'd known people who got enlistment bonuses around $15k. Now I'm not ANYWHERE close to expecting to get that much, but it just makes me wonder.

Anyways, to the point of the thread. If you had $15k slapped onto your lap, what car would you buy, and why?

I'd be looking along the lines of a:

-FD or FC RX7
-Used 350Z
-Eclipse GSX
-Turbo'd 240sx

You know, something decently cheap, in nice shape, and plenty money left over for goodies.

I know everyone's had these kind of thoughts before, so what would yo udo?

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

E36 M3. They're a little short on power compared to newer sports cars, but the handling feel is absolutley incredible, as is the feeling of being glued to the road. Pound for pound probably the most fun car I have ever driven.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

I saw a nice low mile bmw 325i for that price. That or a mazda 3 maybe, but i'd be going for a reliable sedan kind of an investment. If i'm dropping 15k in cash I want something new.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

if this scenario includes me still having my current accord, then I'd find a decent 96 Legend coupe. Beautiful car. Of course I'd be adding my own touch of style to it.

But if I was in the mood for performance I'd hunt down a E36 M3 though it'd be tough to find one with low miles for 15k

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

Probably a 68-69 Camaro in decent running shape, or as much of a car as I could get for $15k. They are reeeeeeeeeally hard to find for cheap without needing a ton of work.

Maybe a high milage LS1 F-Body AND the insurance policy to go with it.

But now that I think about it, I'd spend about 2k modding my current Camaro to my contentment and saving the rest untill Im out of college and looking to buy something new.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

Seriously, if I could live my late teens/early 20s over again, I would make better financial decisions. Granted, I didn't do anything horrific to my credit, but still, listen to age speaking...

If you are intent on making a vehicular purchase, spend about 1/4 of your "projected" $15 grand on the vehicle of choice. Sure, you can put a little more into it afterward, but invest the MAJORITY in a fund of some sort. It will pay off in the future.

In your life, there will be many unexpected expenses that you can't possibly forsee right now. By using your windfall wisely, you will be on top of the game rather than behind it.

But like I said, that's just what I wish I would have done with my financial windfalls instead of making stupid purchases.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

15 grand i would spend on either a 98-02 Camaro Z28/SS, 86-87 buick grand national, or a 92-93 GMC typhoon.

You hit the mark.... Bang for the buck an FD will mess up any in it's path.

I speak from experience after all.

Already ahead of you, got money in a savings account from nearly a year of $35 deposits a month. Plus I plan on making a career out of the Air Force, once I get deep into it, money will be the last of my worries.

I just want something to blast around in before I go off to Basics, then something nice sitting in the garage once I'm allowed to live off base.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

I wouldn't spend it on a car. I'd invest it.

But if I HAD to buy a car, then it would be a used S2000.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

with $15,000 i'd buy myself a 90's M3. love the styling and they're pretty quick and handle pretty well, although before i could make a definite answer i'd have to drive one lol. it'd be either that or an older sports car of some sort, like 60's or 70's sports car. that's if i already had a car and was buying a fun car.

Re: 15 grand? Whats your whip?

A built engine, new paint, and new wheels for the mr2 and realistically, that would cost around $15k
