Re: 2001 gt starting troubles

Welcome to AF.

With ignition to on do you get the instrument panel (IP) lights? Check the battery terminals where the cables hook up and make sure 12 volts is present at the engine compartment fuse box and starter solenoid "S" terminal. Possibilities are security related Passkey III problem, ignition switch, transmission range-neutral/park switch, crank relay, blown fuse, wiring/cabling or starter/solenoid.

Re: 2001 gt starting troubles

Jason,

Same thing happened to my red '99 GP GT two weeks ago. Heeere's my story. I checked the voltage at the battery, pulled the red cap at the fuse box next to the battery and check the voltage there, then I peeled back the rubber cap on the cable attached to the alternator-checked the voltage there, and found those cable all had 13.5 volts dc on them. Those three cables are attached to the starter solenoid. From the left front side of the engine compartment I took one of the probes from my meter (the other one was wedged on the exhaust manifold to ground it) reached down to the starter until I had it on the big post and read 13.5 vdc. Actually my cute'R half read the meter since I was reaching down to the starter with the probe and couldn't see the digital volt meter. Then I moved the meter's probe to the smaller post and had my wife turn the ignition switch to the run position and then again read 13.5. So I knew from there and then my starter solenoid was suspect, maybe defective or the connections were dirty/corroded. I got underneath the car, with a 8 & 13 mmm socket/ratchet wrench removed the cables and inspected them for corrosion. When I saw they were clean, I went ahead removed 10 mm bolt that holds the gap cover, removed the two 15 mm bolts (think that was the size of the bolt heads) that held the starter to the engine and removed the starter. It was a cake job to R & R the starter.
