Not trying to be a hard nose but. Before we can give you any answer we need some info. What is the fuel pressure? Is it Losing spark or fuel pressure or injector pulse? Any codes or security lights on? After market theft or remote start stuff? Tune up history? Tips on getting a good answer to your questions. People trying to answer your question do not have a crystal ball. So give them all of the info you have like year make and model and engine and transmission and mileage. Also cars engine and transmission service history or any recent repairs or problems. Also a description of your problem and what it is doing or not doing. If you have codes give up the code no. And remember a code does not say replace the part but only points to the problem that you have to check out. So to better help you give up all of the info you have on it. MT

Re: new fuel pump won't stay running
Was the old cat damaged? I've seen them fall apart inside and shotgun the muffler with debris to the point no exhaust could get through, and the motor will only run until it backs up so much the intake can't overcome...

Re: new fuel pump won't stay running
What were the symptoms that lead you to change fuel pump ? I'm borne to think the symptoms you have now were already there before....
THe plugs smelling fuel make me think you have no spark. No crystal ball here but crank pickup and ignition module are classic failures on that engine ...in fact, as in a lot with that mileage...

Re: new fuel pump won't stay running
If you are still dealing with a start that fades out and stalls after a few seconds, I'm still sticking with the clogged exhaust idea (happens when a cat melts down, or it might have even been overheating the cat BECAUSE of blockage farther down...
See if there's anything coming out the tailpipe when it tries to run. If not, drop the pipe at the cat and see if it will run then... |

It needs Proper testing to get to the bottom of it. If plugs are gas fowled pitch them and get new ones. First thing check for good hot blue spark to all spark plugs. Jumper A-B pins on diagnostic connector and pull codes. Post back if any.
