Who knows how to repair severely cracked fiberglass?

I have an 85 Vette, and the original fiberglass targa top is severely cracked. My Dad and I think it was either dropped, or maybe it even blew off of the car. Can someone give me step by step instructions for repairing the fiberglass? I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me

Re: Who knows how to repair severely cracked fiberglass?

ok frist you go to your auto motive store and get
a can of resin and some fibreglass and some hardner
which should come with the resin and a can of actone
this is for clean up and you should wear gloves when useing it.
then you wil have to sand the fibreglass till there is no paint or any
other con taments that are near the cracks.
you well then take about two table spoons of resin in the container
and mix about 15 drops with the resin and mix it throwly and appy it to the cracks . the fibreglass is used on the crack as soon as the resin is appyed.

add more resin untill fibreglass is throughly satuated. let dry and sand you may have to wipe clean and appy more resin.to fill in any little holes.
now you shold have a good idea of what you are doing . if not take it to a body shop and they will do it for you. good luck .

Thanks. How much do I need to sand it before I put the fiberglass back over it? How far down, etc...

Re: Who knows how to repair severely cracked fiberglass?

just sand it down so that it is clean. i well also sudjest to do the back side with the fibreglass and resin to give it strenght.
then the out side just fill the crack with resin to
have a better finnsh . it is hard to tell you eactly how to make it look perfix
so do your best. i would really have to see the cracks and know just were they are and how big. i hope that you make out alright. remember after its hard you can always sand it off. good luck alan

Re: Who knows how to repair severely cracked fiberglass?

My C4 had a nasty stress crack where the Roll bar, halo or whatever it's called, joins the fender. It had been repaired twice by the previous owner. I got some excellent advice from a boat builder who also owned a Vette. I used a product called SMC 2 adhesive. Cut grooves across the crack and groove out the crack. The guy said to get out all the old repair material. Mix the SMC and fill the cracks and grooves.

This was about 8 years ago and the car has been continually autoX'ed. I saw it about a year ago and that repair was still holding.

Re: Who knows how to repair severely cracked fiberglass?

you need to sand down the thickness of the mat your putting on,,and alwaYz sand till you cant see cracks anymore,,but first rough sand the underneath and put 1 layer of mat jus for integrity while you work on the top,,if you dont when you go to fair things up you'll end up sanding all the work you just did awaY
