Enamel Thinner Affecting Acrylics???

Hey guys

just wondering, does Enamel Paint or Thinner affect Acrylics in anyway?

I like to use future as Gloss Coat, and then i wouldn't be able to use a Acrylic wash for the panel lines. So i guess my only choice would be Enamel...

so.. anyone tried?

Wink Try it.

I think you would be O.K. using an enamel wash, but always do a test on a scrap body or piece of plastic first. I know the military builders do an oil based wash over their acrylic paint jobs.

Try india ink before putting on the Future. I always use Future and this works for me. You can clean up the ink with ammonia and it does not need any thinning. Apply with a sharp toothpick.

Thumbs up Go for it!

I've made a jet model for my airbrushing book, and the method there was to paint the metallizer color, then a good coat of acrylic clear (I used Gunze 501), then a panel line wash made from artist's oil paints and mineral spirits paint thinner. This doesn't affect the acrylic at all, and it's messier doing a big wash like that vs. using smaller amounts w/smaller brushes on the panel lines of a car. After I had finished the wash, I applied dull clear acrylic back over the whole surface, making the jet look like it had a bit of weathering over the variety of metal shaded panels.

By all means test it out on something before trying it on a particular model, just to make sure...it's good insurance.

I know that, that is why I said ink the lines first then put the Future on. Also the Future just gets reflowed a bit. Future can be re worked aand redone and touched up by reflowing with ammonia or a 50/50 ammonia/Future mix that is why I love it. It is never ruined it's always fixable.

yes you can use an enamel wash on acrylic but you gotta becareful, if you rub too hard it will eventually eat away at the acrylic. i almost ruin the paint job on one of GKs.

i don't really want to put future on last as i scare the panel lines will turn glossy.

I don't know how you put Future on but I wipe it on and I don't get it that wet that any gets down in the lines. You need not worry about that. Another thing if you have any Craft or Art supply stored in your area look for the Throw away type Technical pens get the.01mm and .005mm size they work great for panel lines.
