backyard motor swap?
anyone ever swapped a motor in their back yard? i dont have a garage and want to swap a b16, but is there anyways i can do it in grass? i was thinking using a 3/4" sheet of mdf particle board (what they make sub boxes out of) to put the car on with jack stands and another sheet to sit the hoist on. you think this would work? or is it just asking for trouble? and i would use a tarp or car cover to cover it up when im done at night.
anyone ever done this?

Re: backyard motor swap?
Millions of motors have been swapped on dirt. If you dont have a hoist but have a big sturdy tree you can use a chain fall on a limb.

Re: backyard motor swap?
Yea, just get you some decent jack stands...if you get the cheap ones you can put a small sheet of metal on the base of them for stability. And depending on how soft the ground is where you are, you might not need the sheet for the hoist, these motors aren't that heavy. If you have the sheet laying around, it wouldn't hurt to put under the hoist, but no sense and going and buying one if you don't have one.

Re: backyard motor swap?
Hell, if you wanna do it in two pieces, you can just unbolt the engine from the trans and have a friend help you pick it up out of the engine bay after you take the manifolds off... weve done it here plenty of times... then you drop the trans out the bottom of the car, you shouldn't have any major problems that way, just make sure the car is just about at ride height when you go to pull the engine out, lest you hurt your back or something else.
And look... it's a light engine, and I carry them around all the time, but DON'T TRY TO DO IT ON YOUR OWN. AND DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU DO SOMETHING STUPID AND HURT YOURSELF. Get a friend and a 6 pack to help you. |

Re: backyard motor swap?
i cant cary a D15b2 myself very far, or at all really. sorta could guide it down thats all. maybe im just weak i dunno. me and a buddy had no problems tho. but the swap is easy as long as u can cover everything from the weather if you have to, which you can. and have lights close so u can work at night as well, which always ends up happening. good luck

Re: backyard motor swap?
and if you rebuilding the new motor you putting in, you could actually install it without a cherry picker. Leave the block and head seperate, jack the front end of the car up high enough to slide the motor and tranny under the car. Get a couple jacks and a friend, sit the block and tranny on the jacks and raise it up into the mounts, then put the head one with the intake manifold. Also works in reverse order if your not worried about the motor your pulling out, or plan on rebuilding it as well.
