Another head question(s)

Ok one last question about my head gasket replacement (96 3100 v6). What if I DON'T replace the valve stem seals that come with the kit? Is it a big deal? I'm not sure of the proper way to install them, although I DO have a valve spring compressor. Ok, 3 questions. I've never used the fel-pro gaskets. Which side goes up? The striped blue side with the numbers printed? Or the flat blue side? Finally, what if I DON'T chase the threads in the block? Is that a big deal? I can't find an 11 X 1.50 tap anywhere. I'm also not sure of what kind of thread sealant to use on the new bolts.

Sorry about the bombardment of questions, but after I know the answers I can "slap" it back together.

Thanks and Happy holidays! Ya'll have been a huge help so far.

Re: Another head question(s)

It is silly not to do this job properly, while it is apart, the heads should be checked for straightness any way, maybe have a machine shop do that and the seals, the hd gaskets should be marked or noted in the packaging. Buy a tap most good parts stores can get them, NAPA for one.

Re: Another head question(s)

the old seals will usually come off with a pleirs or a needle nose, dont worry about messing the old ones up. You dont need to use the special tool when putting the new ones back on (the little inch section of what looks like a drinking straw). They usually just slip right on with the aid of some engine oil.

While your there might as well have the valves and seats ground.

As for the head bolts, if there was sealer on there, you better tap them out, or it wound clamp the head as tight as it should with the specified torque. You'll want to chase those threads out, and blow them or vacuum them out.

When installing the new head bolts. Any high temp silicon sealer will do. (i believe) someone correct me if im wrong.

Re: Another head question(s)

I woulnd't use any sealer on the threads unless they enter a cooling passage and it is then recommended, this can skew the torque settings.

Re: Another head question(s)

You're right. I had the machinist who planed the decks of my heads put the new seats in, only $25 extra. What a steal. I still can't find an 11 X 1.50 tap anywhere, including NAPA. I haven't checked carquest yet. I just want to get the stupid thing together. Any suggestions? I also can't find anything in the package about which side of the gaskets goes up.
