Re: rear wiper removal problems

The service manual for a 1993 wagon simply states:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove wiper arm and blade.
2. Remove pivot shaft attaching nut and washers, then disconnect wiper motor electrical connector.
CAUTION: Pull connector only. Do not pull wires.
3. Remove wiper motor attaching nut, then the motor.
4. Reverse procedure to install.

I thought I had a bad rear wiper motor on my Merc. Mountaineer. After removing the nut under the plastic cover, the arm slid off the spline shaft. Once I got the arm off, I noticed many of the splines in the wiper arm were flat. I tried the motor just for kicks. It worked fine. I reinstalled the wiper arm, being sure to "torque" it down. The rear wiper's been working fine since. However, the first time I turn it on and there's some ice on the arm, I suspect I'll strip the splines out the rest of the way.

To shorten this long story, on the Mountaineer, the rear wiper arm is just slid over a spline shaft. In your case, there is probably corrosion in the splines causing it to be seized in place. Once you remove the nut, if you spray a bit a penetrating oil into the shaft, let it soak a few, then pry the arm away from the body of the car, you'll probably be able to get the arm loose.

Re: rear wiper removal problems

I've got a 94 wagon also.. if you look closely at the base of the wiper arm where the splined shaft is, you'll see a tiny tab, for lack of better description, which you need to lift up in order to remove the arm.. it should come right off.. I used a small screwdriver to get under there.. use a little anti-seize when you re-assemble it. the manual makes no mention of this, one of the figure-it-out-yourself deals..

Re: rear wiper removal problems

I had one rear wiper so corroded from road salt that it just would not come off. The retaining tab slid up no problem. I sprayed it with 5 different brands of penetrating fluids with no luck. They just made the tab not want to stay up, so I used a wood sliver to keep it unlocked while I used a large pair of channel lock pliers to try and get the arm off. No luck, so I drilled through the arm to the rotating spline nub and sprayed it from there. After letting it soak for a day, it still wouldn't come off, so I used a metal cutting blade and cut the arm head down to the nub at the top and bottom. I think the best advise for anyone is to get some anti-seize on there as soon as you get the vehicle, then you won't be replacing the arm.
