Question REGIFTING: resourceful or tacky?

what do you guys think about giving someone something you already have?

for example, when i drove from alaska to alabama i bought a 700min phone card (for emergencies or whatnot) and used only 15min on it. so, now i have a phone card with 685min on it, but i have a cell phone with free long distance so i dont need the phone card. my sister, whose name i drew in our family christmas present exchange, lives in georgia and she said that she would like a phone card for christmas since she and her fiancee only have a house phone and no long distance. in a situation like that, where i have something that is of no use to me and someone else needs it, is regifting okay?

another example (i know i said i wouldnt do this, but then i realized it's JUST a VIDEO GAME): my boyfriend wants the NCAA football 07 game for christmas. well, i have about 15 of my own video games that i will never play (and neither will he) that i want to take to a video game store and use them to get store credit to get him the game he wants. this isnt exactly regifting, i'm using something that otherwise will just sit around and collect dust to get something he wants. if i'm short on cash, and he's still getting what he wants, should there be a problem? he said the problem is that we'd already talked about taking in the games for credit to get the NCAA game, we'd just never gotten around to it. well, now i'm getting around to it and he's accusing me of trying to rip him off on christmas presents!!

game swap is totally legit! I think lil sis would appreciate the phone card. Maybe you can get her a lil something else too? Nothing big but maybe a small gesture

Re: REGIFTING: resourceful or tacky?

Both instances are fine with me. If he gets all pissy about yout trading in the old games, he'll chill out once he sees what you got in exchange for em.

On a side note, you drove from Alaska to Bama?!!!??!!?!?

well, we've talked about it a lot the past couple of days and he is being very stubborn about this stupid game. i dont know if it's because he knows it's what he'll be getting or because i wouldnt be paying the full price, but he keeps saying that "it wont be a present." so what i think i will do, to prove my point that a gift is a gift and it's the thought that counts, is buy the game full price and give it to him. and then give him the games i would have traded in for it.

Re: REGIFTING: resourceful or tacky?

Um, neither of those struck me as regifting. And both seemed pretty reasonable...especially if you are financially strapped right now. Granted if you aren't, something small additionally would be nice, but both of those situations seem fine to me.

I though you were talking about regifting like Frank the Tank style. That is only good when it's in a movie with Will Ferrell, any and all other instances...no good. (which is why I stopped giving my uncle presents...true story)

If he's accusing you of ripping him off on Christmas presents, get a new boyfriend. The selfish prick.

Fuck I hate Christmas.

+1

If he is going to act like that, give him coal. No, literally. See how his attitude turns around... and if it doesn't, you should turn around and walk right out the door.

Thats Bama, come on to Tejas, we know how to treat our women (for the most part)

I agree with those 2 above. I say don't get him shit for being a crybaby. For christ sakes, you drove from Alaska just to be with him!!! For me that'd be the gift that keeps on giving. Please tell me you had cruise control.
