1999 S10 won't crank
I ahve a 1999 s-10 that has been starting hard for the last week or so. Last night i cleaned the battery treminals, now it won't even crank.
I tried to jump it and it won't crank. I put a battery charger on it (battery is onbly a year old) and it seems ok, was a little low. I left it on all night to charge, went out this morning and first time i turned the key, it cranked but did not turn over. second time i tried it did nothing. I don't even get the clicking noise. I can hear the relay in the fuse box switching and the fuses are all fine. I was thinking it could either be my ground or my starter. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so what was the problem. Thanks. |

Re: 1999 S10 won't crank
Welcome to AF. First check all the cable and ground connections, clean and tight. Then have the battery tested properly, take it somewhere if necessary. It is 7 years old at least if original.

Re: 1999 S10 won't crank
If the battery has a dead short in it and will not charge then to jump bypass it - pos cable on pos battery term then neg to a good metal ground and give it a try. Check the voltage of the battery if you lost a cell it drops 2.1v so approx 10.5 and usually won't start then either. Crank sensor has no effect on turning over or cranking, only starting as it tells the PCM/ECM the crank position to fire the plugs. Ign switch, relay, ign wire to the starter (make sure the nut is still holding it on at the starter and with a volt meter see if 12v when key to start), battery/cables/terminals all good/clean/tight, and the fusible link are items to look at. If all good hit the starter with a 3 lb hammer then try to start as this usually frees up a failing starter as the bushings wear and the internal assembly drops some - hard to reach on a 4wd.
