Trans shifting to Fast, No down shft

I have a 1990 Cherokee it shifts good but to fast no mater how far you push the gas . It will not down shift (like passing gear) . You can shift it by hand and it shifts good and hard. I have only had it for about 2 weeks now . Still trying to get the bugs out of it . Thanks for the help

Hey Mud Duck - Welcome to the forum!

If your Jeep is like my '92, there is a cable that runs between the throttle body lever and down to the transmission. I think its called the TV cable (I don't know what that means).

Anyway, there is an adjustment procedure that might help. I would suggest you get a service manual to get the rest of the bugs out.

Here is the procedure for my Jeep:

THROTTLE CABLE ADJUSTMENT
With ignition off, fully retract cable plunger. Press cable button down and push cable plunger inward. Rotate throttle lever to wide open throttle position. Cable will ratchet to correct position. Release throttle lever. Cable is now adjusted.

I would also look into testing the Throttle Position Sensor.

Thanks . I tryed it the way you said but no luck . I have a hanes book it said the same thing . Thanks for the help. I called Dodge they said bring it in and for $85 they would tell me what was wrong with it.

IMO...go to an automatic transmission specialty shop...if you have to go to a shop about the AW4 transmission.

also, do a search on here for 'TPS' , aka- 'Throttle position sensor' , and 'FSM' , - 'Factory service manual'

I had the very same issue with my '89, and it was the TPS being out of specs. This only required the use of a volt-meter and a torx bit. (forget what size at this point, srry)...

I had tried adjusting the TV (throttle valve) cable many times thinking that was the problem, but alas, it was the TPS all day long...

PS- make sure you've got the proper fluid level in the tranny..

x 2 here. My '88 had a similar problem along with "hunting" between gears while driving at 45mph. Turns out mine was the TPS as well.

Found problem the tps was not working . The guy I got it from must have taken it off (TPS) for something and did not put it back right . It works I looking for 5.0 mustangs now OK maybe a K5 Thanks for help. Kenny
