Front Driveshaft

ok, in trying to solve a vibe problem, im looking into my front driveshaft. My

question is, while lying under the car and pushing up and down on the

shaft....should there be any play in the slip yoke( i think its the slip yoke?)

where the grease fitting is?

There may be a little play, like maybe 1/8" of movement at the slipyoke.
pull the driveshaft off and drive. Thats a sure fire way of finding out if its a driveshaft related vibe. You dont even need to pull the whole driveshaft off, just unbolt it at the axle and tie it up out of the way. Dont put it in 4X4 if you choose to just tie it up.

Its ok if the collar spins. Im rebuilding a front driveshaft today. New Ujoints, regreasing the CV centering ball. Im going to use it for a rear DS when I lift my XJ. The collar spins on mine also. Ive never had that collar off before. Its a tight fit on the shaft but I think you can pull it off and seperate the DS. I'll let you know later. BTW, The FDS Im working on now has virtually no play in the slip yoke.

I did some work on my FDS today. No luck getting that cap off though. I tried pulling, twisting, beating and it wouldnt budge. Maybe it doesnt come off? but I dont know whats holding it on.
