98 ls1 vs 99 mustang gt and 05 srt-4

i was at a party with some buddies and one of the kids there had a white 99 auto mustang gt. i had never actually raced a mustang from a dig in this car, so i convinced him to take it out for a run. there's this nice 1/2 mile or so stretch that's about 5 lanes across a mile or so away from my old high school. and there's never any cops there that i've ever seen b/c it's kind of out of the way and doesn't get much traffic at night. anyways we lined up to go from a dig. he has an intake and catback exhaust, and i just have an slp lid and an exhaust cutout and i'm an auto too. i had traction ctrl on so i wouldn't roast my tires,, right off the line i got a slight jump on him and walked him steadily, but as soon as I hit 2nd i just pulled very hard and left him multiple bus lengths behind by ~110. then we went from a 25mph roll. my car downshifted and then basically left him way behind. i let off at about 100 that time with a very large distance betwen us once again. he then yelled out his window "that thing definately outpowers me! you've got me beat man!" i'm glad to see he didn't have any lame excuses or wasn't a dick about it. fun race.

i was with one of my buddies who had dropped his arms to start the race with the stang,, after that we went to a kid's house who i had raced before but he wanted a rematch. he has a blue 05 srt-4 and we raced a few months ago when we were both stock and i put a couple bus lengths on him. since then I got the mods i mentioned before and he got a BOV, thermostat, and cai,, nothing major for either of us since our first run. we lined up at that same stretch that i raced the mustang at, and i had traction control on once again. my friend dropped his arms again, and he got a fender on me in the first instant probly due to the traction ctrl, but about 1 second into the race i just started walking pretty hard and had maybe 1 or 1.5 bus lengths on him by 110. we went from a 25 roll as well, in which i got the jump and just walked away pretty strong once again. i had 5 or 6+ car lengths on him by 100.

anyways, i'm pretty satisfied with how she's running, and tommorrow i'm droppin her off to put a 3400 torque converter (2.1 str) and tranny cooler in. i've heard they shave about .4-.6 of your E.T. on street tires, so assuming i can hook, the TA should be a whole different animal come tommorro night

lol yeah, and i bet you'll never guess his excuse after he lost the race. "i think i have a boost leak." i give more credit to the mustang owner for humility.

I'm surprised you even raced them,a LS1 is the killer of almost all stock engines other than the higher LS engines.

Pretty much to be expected. Nice kills nonetheless.

yeah the stang was auto..i've raced another srt-4 who had similar mods as this one plus a boost controller and it was a lot closer. i still edged him out by about 3 car lengths but he was pushin 20 psi and he def hung with me better. still waitin to get my car back from the shop tonight. it's taking a little longer than expected but i should have it around 8 or so

Re: 98 ls1 vs 99 mustang gt and 05 srt-4

Why were his mods a disgrace?
A bov? Maybe he didn't like the stock surge valve...
A new t-stat? We wanted cooler coolant temps.
A cai? He wanted to free up some space under the hood

Some people don't have as much of an urge to quickly mod up a car.

Re: 98 ls1 vs 99 mustang gt and 05 srt-4

Good kill. The torque converter is going to make a huge difference. Most people overlook it as they only want mods that add horsepower. With drag radials you'll be mertilizing most everything out there, including AWD cars. Looks like you've got an aggressive torque converter going in too.

I can't wait to see 1/4 mile times, and will venture to say that it will probably be in the very low 13 sec. area.
